Lexios is a startup from Switzerland, changing how we all learn vocabulary in a new language. We just launched the product and improve our service based on your feedback:
Vocabulary is an essential part of learning a new language. Until now, you could use vocabulary cards or dedicated apps to do so. That works. But it requires a lot of dedication and planning. With Lexios, we allow our users to learn vocabulary effortlessly while browsing the web. Scientific research clearly shows the advantages of this approach. That's what we base our product on.
What is Lexios and how does it work: A user installs the browser extension on this notebook or desktop (at this stage, we don't support mobile devices). We offer extensions for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. After installing the free extension, the user chooses the target language and the base language. Then, the user chooses the current level of experience (A1 to C1), and the learning journey starts. While browsing a website (e.g., newspaper) in the base language, Lexios translates relevant words into the target language. We choose the words based on the context, the level of experience of the user, and an ideal spaced repetition. You choose the number of translations per page, and you can also blacklist pages that you don't want to see words.
But I have seen that before you might say: Right, but we have learned and improved the product further. Unlike similar tools, we don't claim that you learn a new language. It is about vocabulary, and that we want to do really well. With Lexios we show you more translations than others, and we also offer a better quality of translations. In doubt? Go check it out.
So happy that people can finally use it!
I got inspired back in 2019 after participating in a study (link below) comparing this concept of effortlessly learning while browsing to traditional methods such as vocabulary tables. Many other participants and I just loved the idea right away. We were disappointed to find out that no real product existed back then...
That was the initial push to start the Lexios journey! We have based Lexios learning on this study, on spaced repetition research to optimize word display, and on word difficulty to match the user level. Hence guaranteeing an optimal time between two appearances of the same word and only showing words that match your level (at A1 we show common and easy words while we offer much more complex and rare words at B2-C1 levels).
We have a clear goal of making people learn vocabulary in the long term. Hence our spaced repetition algorithm can take up to a year to make you fully master a word forever. That makes us quite different from some of our competitors that do not allow for as much personalization and long-term goals. But this is real life, there is no exam in a week, what's the point of learning vocabulary if you forget it after a few months?
I'm excited for Lexios and finally resuming learning German after so many years!
