What do you think? …

This is a brilliant Idea. Going to war on wastage. I'm really interested in where you got your data from? Like how long milk will last once opened. Really neat and attractive product. Great work!

Hi @alex_gorman, Asier here, maker of Kiff. That's an excellent question. In this first version of the app, you need to set the shelf life yourself. On most of the packaged products, the manufacturer usually indicates this on the label. Not only for how long they last, but also how to store them once opened. For example, our milk carton says: Once opened, keep in the refrigerator, and consume within three days. But we are working on a suggestion system to help you pick each product's best shelf life, for packaged and non-packaged products, like fruits and vegetables. There are multiple data sources. Usually, each country has its own food safety office. In the United States, the FDA, USDA & CDC have their database for food storage recommendations and might collide with Europe's advice, for example. We are now gathering the best info we can find and taking extra care to build this feature. Because we don't want people to throw food too soon—the food might not be in its best state, but that doesn't mean it's harmful—causing unnecessary waste. We will ship this feature as a free update later this year. Meanwhile, you can check our shelf life guide as a reference here: https://kiff.app/support/tips/fo...

@asier Fantastic. It is important that people don't get overly worried and throw away their food too soon. Your sending a great message into the world. I'll look forward to all the updates in the future.

@ash_bryant Hi Ash, sorry to hear that. We might consider doing something for Android in the future. If we do, we’ll let you know for sure!

This sounds like a great app. Is it or will it possible to just scan the product bar code to be sure of finding the right product? Ideally that would get the expiration date too since they can sometimes be hard to find.

@ianmayman Hi Ian, another excellent question 🤔 That would be awesome, but sadly barcodes don't contain the expiration date. They only store the Universal Product Code. They tell us what product, manufacturer, and package size. All units from the same product share the same barcode regardless of their expiration date. You can buy two bricks of milk at the same supermarket with the same barcode but different expiration dates. Although you can get more data from the barcode, through 3rd party databases, it is usually more general, like nutritional info or the product's category. We have tried using computer vision to recognize the expiration date printed on the label. Still, you have to find the date and point the camera towards it. The experience is poor, and it's more inconvenient than filling the date manually. We'll keep digging.

@nereski Thank you, still is it possible with the Kiff app to identify the item by scanning the barcode? This would be quicker even without the expiration date.

@ianmayman No at the moment. The minimum info you need to add a new item is to set a name and select an icon. It's quite fast, and this way, we keep the same flow for packaged and no packaged food, like leftovers or fruit and vegetables. And this also gives you more freedom to add different names to your food instead of those written on the label.
