Hello, Product Hunt community! 🚀
🙃 My name is Bilaal, and I'm thrilled to be introducing you to "How Much?" - an app to help you stop wasting money.
💯 From things like unreturned parcels or expired vouchers to forgotten subscriptions or unnecessary purchases, we've all wasted money on things that we didn't need and regretted. I created "How Much?" to keep track of all these things, as well as any times I had managed to save money so that I could keep track of things and try and change my money behaviour.
🎉 Get rewarded for good behaviour with fun confetti animations to help make changing your money behaviour fun!
🪄 A quick pro tip: Enable Private Mode to hide private entries from display, whilst still including them in stats.
🛡️ And most importantly, the app doesn't contain any ads or tracking, so your privacy is protected the whole time.
🔄 Effortlessly access your data across all your Apple devices – iPhone, iPad, and Apple Silicon Macs. With iCloud sync, your financial journey stays up-to-date wherever you go.
🤖 I'd love to hear your thoughts on "How Much?", so please comment below and let us know what you think!
🫶 Thank you for your endless support!
We've all regretted spending on unnecessary things. Let's change that! How did you come up with the idea to help users log their spending habits and save money?
@ricardo_luz It was all from my personal experience. One day I tried to total it up and then I released just how big it becomes when you add all those small amounts together. From that point on I tried to keep a mental tally and once that became too big I realised that I had to build this.
@bilaalrashid It's great to hear that your personal experience drove you to create a solution for managing spending habits! Many of us don't realize the impact of those small expenses until we add them up. It's interesting how keeping a mental tally turned into a necessity. How did you go about translating this realization into a practical solution? What were the key challenges you faced while developing the system to help others track their spending and save money?
@ricardo_luz The main challenge I faced was the design. It needed to be "judgemental" enough that it can help users change their habits, whilst still being fun, friendly and approachable enough that users would want to open it and engage with it over the long term. It took a lot of iteration and testing and I ended up trying to take a lot of inspiration from interfaces like Screen Time. This process also led me the add the option of logging savings into the app. Initially, I had the vision of calling the app "How Much Money Have I Wasted?" and focussing just on the negative. However, I found that the app became a lot more approachable when it can also help celebrate good habits and build behaviour through positive reinforcement learning too.
@apexkg Great question! The data is only stored locally on the device in an iOS/macOS Core Data database. The app supports iCloud sync/backup using Apple's CloudKit. If you enable this in your iCloud settings, then a copy of the database will be stored and uploaded to your iCloud account, where it is encrypted. I have no ability to access or view this data. Other than this, there are no network requests made by the app either to myself or third parties. There are no ads, tracking or analytics. Your data is private and none of my business. You can verify this yourself by inspecting your device's network traffic using a proxy like Burp Suite.
You can see all of this clarified in my privacy policy (https://howmuch.bilaal.co.uk/pri...) and Apple's privacy policy if you wish to use iCloud sync/backup (https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy).
