@dannyprol Thanks! Glad to hear it. The setup wizard is designed to make it as easy as possible to get some useful onboarding messages into the system without having to write them yourself.
Hi everyone! I'm the designer and developer of Aloha.
I built Aloha as a free product to help my clients at For the Win (https://ftw.nyc), an advising firm I launched earlier this year. When I went looking for welcome bots, all I could find were a few scripts on Github that would send a single message on team join.
The welcome messages at many of the Slack teams I joined ended up being book-length screeds, which is pretty overwhelming on your first day as part of a community. They also required admins to self-host on a server like Heroku, which is a big ask for most community managers.
There didn't seem to be anything out there that was easy to install and let admins set up more than one message. Given how effective drip marketing is for user onboarding, it seemed like a natural next step to build something for Slack to space out the onboarding across multiple days.
Here are some things Aloha can do for new members:
- Send them a link to your Code of Conduct right after joining
- Ask them to introduce themselves in an #introductions channel
- Offer guidance on which channels to use, and for what
- Politely request they avoid using @channel in favor of @here
- Direct them to your wiki, shared calendars, or any other important resources
And for anyone curious about what's under the hood:
- Aloha is a proper Slack app (submitting for review soon), with a one-click install
- It's a Sinatra app, with the Slack bot components built on the fantastic work @dblockdotorg has done with https://github.com/slack-ruby/sl...
- It's open-source! The code is here: https://github.com/ftwnyc/aloha
- It's hosted on DigitalOcean with dokku: http://code.dblock.org/2016/02/0...
New team members have a lot to learn, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Aloha lets you onboard them gently by delivering what they need to know when they need to know it.A nifty slack but which does what it says.
