Good afternoon! For example, I was just a terrible student at school, I chose the wrong profession, I spent 5 years aimlessly at university, I served in the army, where there was a lot of stress and failures. But then I started looking for opportunities, to find a new job in another field, which I like to learn a new specialty and learn new skills, I opened my own business. I tried moving to big metropolitan areas and looking for myself there. I've tried and tried. It's all because I didn't want to live the life of an average person, but to be remembered and contribute to humanity and create something that truly helps people be happier. I learned how to set goals for myself and achieve them. And now I'm still on my way to my goal, but I see it in my hands.
And now I work as a product owner in a medical education IT product and help doctors learn and communicate more productively in healthcare. I have created and developed interesting commercial projects that have had a high return on investment because of my efforts. And now, after 30 years, I win prizes in dancing (amateur, but still), I do boxing and try to maintain harmony in my family. 
   
Sorry, but this is not a self-presentation of my achievements, this is the story of an ordinary man from a poor family, the story of a student with bad grades and terrible behavior), who did not immediately understand what he wanted, but was able to change. 
 
Answering your question, I say that it is important to do well in school and set high goals for yourself at an early age. But everyone has their own way and a lot depends on what our parents and people around us lay down in our childhood.

Just normal things, some have trades some have office jobs. I don't think there are any AAA students that crashed out as you hear in the anecdotes it's all rather boring.

@renly_borris I had rather mediocre grades when 7-11 years old, and exceptionally good grades starting from age 12. I got admitted to my preferred university. My career is rather succesful - but some fellow students with lower grades achieved way more. (The game is not over though)

@daniel_engels it should be that way. But it's not. Some years ago, I was a high school teacher in an elite school here in Madrid. Even really bad students ended up as a business managers. And they are not isolated cases.

Social class is probably the biggest predictor of career success, much more than top scoring studies. I have seen bad students succeed in their careers largely because of family support and others, much better students, have to take charge of the family economy while they were still very young.

Most of the highest scoring kids have a regular paying 9-6 job. Most are doing average. None as far as I know, are millionaires. The range is small.

Though some of the lowest scoring students are have lower than average salaries now, some are millionaires now. There's a huge range of possibilities. They made it happen.

Schools don't teach us about real world. Those who can well at exams might not do well in life.
