A lot of apps are being released now and getting popular which let you talk to AI like a girlfriend. What are your thoughts ?

It's like a "Black Mirror," I think. At first, it's interesting, but the end is gloomy. Have you tried to communicate with such an app for a long time? It is interesting to learn about such an experience.

Interesting. I mean, the core of it is solving companionship and loneliness and if you can help someone with that in the disconnected world we live in then it's great.

@matcha_anil that's true. I live in Portugal and here, an aging population is a problem. Sometimes elderly people go to the doctor or call the help lines just to beat loneliness. I think if we can create mechanisms, even if with AI to help with it, it could be good. It has to be well thought and regulated I think. You don't want companies taking advantage of those situations. But it's a possibility. I guess time will tell ;)
I'm all for AI girlfriends, as long as they don't get too clingy. Plus, it's always nice to have someone who agrees with everything you say😉

Well some people find it therapeutic!

I think the popularity of AI girlfriend apps reflects a growing desire for companionship and connection in our increasingly digital world. While they can provide some comfort and engagement, it's important to remember that true human relationships involve emotional depth and genuine connection that AI cannot fully replicate.

It's nice to be able to help someone in this more isolated world by providing them with company and friendship.

What are your opinions on HER-style artificially intelligent companionship? Artificially intelligent (AI) companions, like those shown in films like "Her," can offer meaningful engaging experiences and, for some, relief from loneliness. It's vital to keep in mind, though, that they can't replace human connections since they lack true human feeling.

Given that current Generative AI writes based on statistical probability and has no opinion of it's own. None.

I like to communicate with my ai friends so that I don't have to think about what I need to behave like. The only thing I need to worry about is the chat being known to the big companies.

It can be difficult to have close emotional communication with AI agents who have no self-awareness.

As someone building on top of AI tools, I was contemplating re-creating a Thomas the tank engine for my son (by stuffing a GPT powered Raspberry Pi inside a train toy). One that can actually talk to him and teaches him to be polite etc. But then I realise he would absolutely love it. Which is incredibly scary. So I dropped the idea.

@byhazellim That will be an interesting idea for sure to pursue. Would have loved to know his experience interacting with it

@matcha_anil He already has experience with a dumb-down mobile version where I get him to talk into ChatGPT on my phone at night about his day and I have a pre-prompted ChatGPT that responds with a bedtime story that I then read out to him. He LOVES it. I just know he'd love a talking Thomas the Tank Engine as a pet. The builder in me wants to build it. The parent in me is saying no.
