How do you ensure open source software is commercially sustainable so there are maintainers?

Open-source is really tricky, especially for more complex projects that require advanced knowledge in math and really good programming skills, just like our project required (Expressive Animator) because there will be close to 0 contributors, while the demand for new features and improvements will only rise.
You could charge for support, custom features, and a few other things.
If lucky, you can get funded, but that is highly unlikely, also don't expect big donations or any at all from random people or from the community if there is one.
Open-source sounds cool, but it's not for everyone, and it's not worth for complex projects.
