  • One or multiple Chrome Extensions?

Hey folks, stuck on a decision of whether to have multiple chrome extensions which do specific things but all in the same category (eg. auto-apply to jobs, optimize linkedin profile, match your skills to the job listing, quick-save leads, etc.) OR just have one chrome extension that does it all. As a user, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on which way you'd prefer and why?

I vote for one extesnion since its all a related field. But the benefit of multiple is that different users may want different things and not all of them, so it can be simpler for the user.

It would be wise to consider multiple extensions for a startup as each extension can be marketed separately as an independent tool and will add to the numeric value to the portfolio of products. Of course one of the products have to the USP.

@sanuj_bansal Interesting thought. The downside is that you dilute your "user count", "reviews", and DAU/MAU metrics across multiple extensions.

@sanuj_bansal Won't it make the job of a marketer equally hard though, to create messaging around everything? How would you onboard a user if you need them to install multiple extensions? What if one of your extensions isn't as popular as others and somehow gets flagged for violation, and now your entire workflow breaks if it is a mission critical part of the user experience?

@sandeep_bansal I agree, it will be a harder job for both marketer and development as well, but let's say deciding on the name of the extension, "Linkedin Optimization tool" or "Easy Apply tool" clearly clicks the use case, instead of a generic name such as "Career Helper". Till we have a larger loyal user base, I feel it would favor our growth to have multiple extensions

@rimer_carlyle_espinosa As a user, what if you wanted all the features from say the 5 different extensions, would you be okay downloading 5 times, authenticating 5 times, etc?

@puneet_kohli absolutely. this makes me make a clear judgement (of course after testing all extensions). Whatever makes the most benefits stays, the rest must go.

While I'm not your target audience, I'd imagine my work will be simplified with one extension. Check out daily.dev - An interesting content curation system, that becomes the base of your browser, so anytime you open a tab, it shows you some content, and then a helpful menu on the left of your screen. Essentially, a dashboard for my reading about topics that I care about.

@sandeep_bansal Thanks I'll check that one out. I'm on the camp of a single extension but I am aware that at some point you don't want to feature bloat and make users frustrated with workflows they are not interested in.

@sandeep_bansal A quick example I can think of is, let's say we have a feature of (A) Auto-applying to jobs, and (B) Networking improvements If I am no longer seeking a job, I might care more about (B), but I would still see the features for (A) pop-up now and then which could be distracting
