Is it better to be a generalist of specialist?

Become a specialist in one field, then become a specialist in another, ideally a related one. So eventually a generalist, but with an amazing skill set. I started as a graphic designer almost 20 years ago, then started to learn branding, then UX, then product design. Now I connect all of these into one whole and although I think you could find someone better in design, UX, or product alone, you'll find very few who can connect all of this in a single person. To my career, that's the leverage.
