In terms of design, what do you usually look for when doing competitor research?

Question

I believe there is a step before starting the design of UI UX when we install many apps that are similar to our product. This step is very helpful for me especially to track the feature flow or understand the information sitemap.

How about you ? have you done this also? what do you look for or spot?

Yes, I do competitor research when designing UI/UX. I look for the user experience and the overall flow of the product from a user's point of view to see how it can be improved or adapted for my own product.

@philipsnyder yes i did the same thing and of course tried to think "why did they make this".

I look less for how its designed and more for how my competitors are aligned to benefit their customers.

For example, if I'm marketing my putty as a toy, and my competitor is marketing the exact same putty, but as a glue, then at that point, there is no reason to even consider them a competitor.

That was a more extreme example though, in reality, they will be competitor, but there will be slightly different use cases for their product despite being similar to yours.
