"What is the story behind the Rhino EDGE?
I will try to be brief. To get to where we are at, we must start at the beginning.
In June of 2022, I officially entered my first ever career Sabbatical. I knew I wanted to figure out my next career instead of my next job.
Prayer, reflection and lots of discussions with my amazing wife led me here. I knew I needed some time.
I immersed myself in stuff I love to do. Stuff I had missed for a long time. People I had missed.
When I came out of it there were a few things that were clear. #1. I am a Doer.
I knew I need to do things that create value.
I also needed to address 3 fundamentals in whatever was next.
1. Do what I am good at.
2. Do what energizes me.
3. Avoid career dissatisfiers.
I knew I was energized by solving problems and was successful at leading, designing and transforming operations (20 years of leadership experience). I also knew to control my career dissatisfiers, I needed to be able to choose what I do and who I do it with.
After a discussion with a friend who had been a Fractional CFO, I landed on the idea of taking my skills, experience and enthusiasm into launching a firm focused on offering services as a Fractional COO.
I was excited. What happened next was surprising.
During this time, I was having fun again. Loving time with my wife and family. One day my wife and I were goofing around and spontaneously created a handshake, at the end I made a funny motion near my forehead. My wife laughed and said what was that, without pause I said, it’s a Rhino!
The following day, I open up the PC. No saved screen saver so it was the random one you get from Microsoft. Guess what pops up on the screen? A Rhino. It was a sign!
A couple of weeks later when I set up The Overton Group and setup my website, I brought the Rhino along for the ride. It was the ‘mascot’ for what was next for me.
Shortly after the business launch, early in my new career journey, I met my new friend Jason Carvalho, and we hit it off right away, with our love for Operations. He had over 20 years as an Operations Leader as well, and we appreciated a lot of the same operating principles.
We decided to take our passion and our superpowers to combine forces for good.
As we talked more, it was important for us to outline an operating playbook that demonstrated to us what we believe are the key pillars and principles for success in any operation that is either building or pivoting.
As the playbook took shape, we landed on 5 Pillars, each with 5 principles. We had not planned on it quite this way, but Rhino is 5 letters and we had 5 Pillars.
With some coaxing from a buddy who has had a long and successful career in marketing and brand development he suggested we consider how we might be able to use Rhino as the acronym for the playbook. As we went through the process, it was not hard at all.
When you are building or pivoting, there is a lot to consider. There is a lot of ‘thinking’ required to outline your business and its future. “Reflection is the first pillar and easily fit the first 5 principles (Vision, Strategy, Core Values, Brand & the Organizational Roadmap). Then we went further for the next 4 Pillars (each with 5 Principles): H for Human Capital I for Inform. N for Numbers and O for Operationalize. Before we knew it, the 5 Pillars spelled RHINO. (The other 20 principles you will need to find on therhinoedge.com).
Then came the idea of how we take the playbook to add value for any business. With the intention that each business needs different levels of help. If we provided a free assessment, we could meet them where they are at. We wanted to use the RHINO operating playbook to create this assessment, that we call the operational health check.
The intention was to make it easy for a business in transition to assess their current state. It allows them to validate their strengths, clarify their opportunities, identify their risks, and help provide some context around what actions that may need to take to accomplish their goals. We felt that this gave them an “edge” in taking the first important steps towards transforming their business.
Because this free tool (built in Typeform) provides businesses an advantage, we decided to call it the Rhino EDGE. We hope that startups, small and midmarket businesses can use this FREE tool, to help them catapult their business into a successful future."
This is a version 1.0 and is a good start. The outcomes page is messy but that is a direct result of being built on Typeform. A cleaner design with videos explaining each definition or question would be helpful.
