Texts From Dad was an idea that arose during the pandemic, when silly texts from our dads made us feel happier and more connected. We wanted to be able to create a platform to share dad humor with everyone, no matter the role their own dad plays, played, or doesn’t play in their life. We also wanted to use this opportunity to raise money for low-income families that are struggling right now. Hope you enjoy!

How do you fund this? The idea seems good but surely it costs to send a message so if you have 1M people signed up, and of those you are charged 0.01cent/message then it will cost you $1,000/day? Is it really a free service and does your funding for it come from other sources? Genuinely just interested as I have worked for years in the telecom SMS industry and a lot of ideas like this were only viable via premium-rate services, because it costs per/message via any telecom operator, and if you try and operate it from a phone network with free sms messages, they will block the number if you send too many large batches of messages due to network policies. So I am genuinely curious about it.

@exopaul I've had a bunch of great SMS-based ideas but you're right that the cost makes it prohibitive, even if it's a paid service. I had an idea for workout nudges throughout the day but even just 6 nudges per day ends up costing almost $2/mo per user just for the SMSs :( We're doing this project just for fun and to raise money and only running it for 30 days. We're asking for donations from people and donating all the profit to the Good+Foundation. Donations seem to be a bad model for makers... We've barely got any even with it being mostly charitable ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@wizlikewizard I think you may need to look at it from a different angle. If you are, or have a developer available there may be a great business opportunity in SMS that is sadly neglected by everyone. I certainly have found a gap in the market.
