Index Ventures analyzed 200,000+ employee profiles from more than 200 startups, and packed the data into TeamPlan to help founders benchmark their team growth and composition against the most successful tech companies, from 0 to 500 headcount.
Hello Product Hunt! š
In my 12 years at Index Ventures I have worked with over 200 founders and their teams, helping them to scale their companies. Many are surprised to discover that half of their time gets absorbed by people-related stuff. The amount of headspace taken up by hiring, managing and aligning people is one of the biggest culture shocks when it comes to building a high-growth startup!
Across the journey from idea to IPO, thereās a constant recalibration and focus on whether the team is fit for purpose. Am I hiring engineers fast enough? When should I hire a CFO? What specialist roles in sales or marketing should I hire for? People have historically tried to answer these kinds of questions through patchy, and often misleading, anecdotal evidence or time-sapping manual research.
At Index Ventures, we built TeamPlan to change this, and weāve made it freely accessible to anyone.
TeamPlan is an org design benchmarking tool for rapidly scaling startups. It packs in data from 200,000 career profiles at 200 of the most successful high-growth tech companies (including Airbnb, Figma and Stripe) to help startups make data-driven decisions about org design. It empowers founders and leaders to hire the right people, in the right roles, at the right time. With TeamPlan, you can filter the data by business model, geography and stage; for example, selecting only SaaS businesses in the SF Bay Area at 50 headcount, or B2C Apps outside the US at 250 headcount.
Founders, heads of people, CFOs and other leaders in high-growth startups can use TeamPlan to do things like:
šBenchmark team composition ā Find the optimal ratio between technical, operations, GTM, and G&A teams, as well as the makeup of these teams for each point in your growth journey. TeamPlan shows that at 50 people, around half of US SaaS teams are typically technical, with this dropping to 38% by 250.
āPlan leadership hiring ā Establish when to hire and at what level of seniority. Should you be looking for a CFO or a director of finance? An HR manager or VP People? TeamPlan reveals, for example, that in marketplace startups in the US, 31% have a CFO by the time the company hits the 250 headcount threshold.
š¢Review headcount ā Consider which teams might be looking bloated or under-resourced, depending on your business model. Are you light on product but overweight on marketing? Slim on sales but heavy on technical? Use TeamPlan to find out that on average, in US SaaS companies with 125 employees, just over 30% of the organization is in engineering and 7% is in marketing. This contrasts with D2C e-commerce businesses, which are 15% engineering and 13% marketing in TeamPlan.
These are just sample use cases. You can also use TeamPlan to compare things like attrition rates, internal promotions, leadership titles, and more.
Weād love your feedback on how you can use TeamPlan to scale your startup. In fact, we intend to extend it with more data ā are there any business models or companies youād like to see? Or any particular data sets about talent that would be valuable to you?
Thanks for sharing all this really useful data, but also taking the time to deliver it in such an enjoyable/pleasing visual design and usable interface. Stating the obvious here, but I think you read the data better for it, and enjoy spending time looking through it all.
