SongUp makes collaborative party music queueing easy. Open source, no login required, just create a room and let the party begin! The host has a central screen with a QR code users can scan and instantly add songs to the shared queue.
Hi folks of ProductHunt! 👋
I'm hosting parties at my place a few times a year, although one thing that always bothered me was putting up my Macbook on the table, connected to the speakers, and having all my drunk friends coming up to it and inputting about six thousand of the worst songs you have ever heard. (I'm talking about you, Florian ❤️)
That ends now.
Using SongUp, I connected my laptop to the TV, just put up the host page, and people can scan the QR code using THEIR OWN PHONE.
Everyone can add up to 2 songs at once, ensuring that there can't be 100 songs from that one guy (still Florian) in a row.
SongUp has been a delight for me, and by open sourcing and launching this on here, I hope it will be one for you, too!
On a side note:
Remarkably, people (at the party) seem to adopt SongUp veeeery quickly and I don't even have to tell them because they're like
**ooooh big QR code!! 😮**
and they start scanning it instantly.
Really cool app! 🚀 I was able to get it running quickly and queue up some YouTube songs, and will use it for my next party!
Any plans to make it an app that can be run directly on a TV?
Some things I found a bit confusing on first use:
1. How will I connect my music to this? (later I realized it was integrated with youtube)
2. Where is this supposed to run? How do I get it on my TV?
3. You mentioned "open source", but there is also a hosted version. People might not realize that its both a service and an open source project.
4. Will the hosted version cost money at some point, or still "to be determined"?
PS: nice choice on Supabase :-)
@tleyden First of all, thank you for the feedback!
For the not too distant future I don't have any plans making it a TV app.
Now to address your feedback:
1. That's a good point, though I want to incorporate an actual app walkthrough on first use.
2. For me, the easiest way to put it up on the TV was to use an HDMI cable from my laptop, though with something like an Apple TV you could also use AirPlay. My thought process to this was that I want to still have my laptop connected to the speakers.
3. The hosted version of SongUp, songup.tv, is currently just the easiest way to get it up and running on my own, and I thought I would share it with everyone for free, because, at least atm, it's no-cost for me.
4. I will absolutely try to keep the core features of SongUp, i.e. the ones currently available, for free. Maybe later on I will introduce some kind of payment model, but that is still tbd. Also, you could always just host it yourself, and I will try to document this process as much as possible, because I want to keep SongUp open.
PS: I love Supabase ❤️
@motz All makes sense! For 2, I think non-techie users would benefit from having some docs that describe a "recommended setup".
Also I hope you manage to keep song.tv up and running. I would pay/donate a bit to use it.
BTW I did hit an issue on my iPad where the songs don't seem to auto-play. I'll file an issue on github in case others hit the same issue.
@tleyden I would highly appreciate that if you run into issues!
Currently running songup.tv is no-cost for me, but that could change of course with increased usage. I'm looking into monetization options, but I want to keep songup.tv free to use for everyone. I will also try to make and keep an up to date self hosting guide.
