Can you tell if a QR code is leading you to a malicious site? Even if you can somehow see the URL, it's hard to tell. RevealQR was built to solve this problem. It integrates QR decoding with automated malware scanning so you'll know, BEFORE accessing it.
Ah this is so useful. I am adding it to my tool-chain immediately! I believe this should be added as a feature to every major QR reader app. Would you consider giving the option to change the malware engine?
@bogomep thanks for the kind words! Currently VirusTotal has an aggregate of over 90 antivirus and anti malware engines and its running the URL thru all of them simultaneously when a QR code is scanned, so in a sense there's quite a bit of options.
You can click on "View full report" in the analysis page to see the full list of engines that have scanned the URL in the QR code submitted.
Given the increasingly ubiquitous use of QR codes for almost everything. I felt that there was not enough done to ensure security for users who access them.
In most cases, people are just scanning and accessing the QR codes without any verification or validation. Which is a pretty scary thought from a security perspective.
I felt that there has to be a better way to approach this, hence I created RevealQR.app, it's a web app that decodes QR codes while automatically sending them to a top tier malware analysis platform (VirusTotal) for scanning.
Analysis results are returned immediately, so users can make an informed choice BEFORE accessing the URL in the QR code (or not).
It's my first launch on Product Hunt and I'm very excited to share RevealQR with y'all. It's not anywhere as polished as many of the other products listed (you guys are amazing!), but I figured the only way to learn is by shipping.
Looking forward to any comments/feedback,
Thanks!
David
