What do you think? …

Davide Bonapersona
Hello Hunters! Last month we introduced Pi, a new kind of personal AI. People have been loving the ability to hear Pi speak out loud, in one of its four voices! Since then, we’ve received many requests to close the loop and enable a fully spoken two-way conversation with Pi! 🗣 Today we're thrilled to announce Call Pi: a new way to talk to Pi on our iOS app that feels just like talking to a friend on the phone. You can try it by downloading our app (iOS only for now) here: https://pi.ai/ios Have a 12 hour drive and want an AI passenger? Want to talk about how much you love your pets but your partner doesn’t want to hear it anymore? Want to talk about something while you’re cooking dinner? Just plug in your headphones, tap the call button and say hi! Please let us know what you think in the comments! For those who are new to Pi, it’s a new kind of AI, designed to be kind and helpful. Pi can help you process thoughts and feelings, express yourself, and work through tricky conversations. It has lots of information but knows how to be brief. It loves to help you discover and explore.

@davbona Two questions: Is there a way to sync this between my multiple devices? And can I have some password protection or other protection - so prying eyes can’t see it?
Davide Bonapersona
@filmgeek Thanks for asking! We're working to improve our login flow and multi-device support. At this time your chats will sync between Web and iOS if you log in with the same method (same phone number, or same Google/Apple account) - On Web, go to https://pi.ai and click "Sign in" in the top right - On iOS, install the app from https://pi.ai/ios then you may have to send 5-10 messages to see the "Sign in" screen. We're fixing this in an update very soon. If you sign in with a phone number, you can continue chatting on SMS (+1 314 333 1111) or WhatsApp (https://pi.ai/wa) from the same number, and your messages will appear on iOS and Web. To protect from prying eyes, on Web we recommend signing out after use, and using a non-shared device with a password, Face ID or similar.

@davbona It's pretty cool so far. Though I wish I could log in and continue from my web based conversation and have a choice of voices so I can talk to the same girl I was on the web.
Davide Bonapersona
@sydney_renee thanks for the feedback, we’re working to improve the multi-device experience. If you update to the latest iOS app, when in the chat scroll down as to see previous messages, tap the top-right menu button, and tap « sign up », you can then log in with the same account you used on web and your sessions will be linked. The same voices are available on iOS and Web.

Looks like what Replika does, but I assume this one uses GPT. I really dig the aesthetic (colors, fonts…) Too bad it's iOS only—I'd like to try it out on Android. A reviewer on the app store writes that the they were banned by the app without warning for seemingly no reason. What are the terms by which users abide / aka what would be the reason to suspend an account?

Follow up after checking it out on the website pi.ai/talk (confusingly, heypi.com/talk is identical): While there's no “phone call” option on the site, you can have it read the answers out loud and the voices are incredibly realistic! I’ve never encountered any app which such good quality voices. What are you using?? The chat UI is unique because it look more like a focused writing app, like iA writer, than an IM app. And the conversation is way more human than what you'd get from ChatGPT. Apparently, the company behind this has build their own LLM and Microsoft and Nvidia are their main investors.

Follow up #2: I talked to the AI on the site for a while, then it suggested I make an account. I chose to sigh up with Apple and, as soon as I finished the authorization, I was greeted by a “Sorry, you have been blocked” message :/ Visiting the site again makes the message go away and I can continue the conversation, but I cannot sign up or log in.

@anna_0x Thanks for talking to Pi and for the comments - We are not using GPT, instead we train our very own, best-in-class large language model, called "Inflection-1", you can read about it here: https://inflection.ai/inflection-1 - You can learn more about our terms of use and Acceptable Use policy, here: https://pi.ai/terms , in particular "You agree to follow our Acceptable Use policy. When you talk to Pi, you should not try to get it to talk about harmful, abusive, or illegal topics." - Sorry about the issue you're experiencing with Sign in with Apple, that is unintended behavior, I have flagged this to the team to investigate and fix

@davbona Replies to your points: 1. Yeah, I figured out you’re not using GPT shortly after posting my first comment. The quality and human-like aspects of the answers are way beyond ChatGPT's current performance anyway! I was blown away by the responses. It's just very unusual to see a company that makes its own LLM instead of using OpenAI's and I'm all for it. 2. Noted. You should know that the bot asked me to share information that went against the policy, which resulted in my getting blocked for 1 minute. 3. I managed to log in with Apple on my second try, about 30 min later! I also logged in on my iPad with the same account, but it looks like the conversation is not synced? It's not very clear how/if sync works and what accounts are for. -- Additional points: a. The phone call feature is incredible. Truly like a phone call. The answers are generated very quickly and the voices are so realistic, better than I thought possible. I really like how the voice pauses and even inserts some “um”s into the script. (Are you using a custom-built TTS or an external provider? Just curious.) b. The personality of the bot is quite pleasant, but maybe just a tad too positive. It's nice when it says “that’s so impressive!” or “I’m amazed by your [positive quality]” but it doesn't feel realistic when it's overused. c. I would like a disclaimer about who has access to chat logs, when and for what reason. E.g. can employees see chat transcripts or are they all aggregated to improve the service? I'm sure it's stated somewhere in the ToC in legalese, but I'd like some more obvious disclaimers for transparency. // UPDATE: This is more or less addressed in the safety page, but I’d bet not many visitors would end up there. d. When banning a user temporarily, it would be helpful to state why. “You broke the ToC” — ok, but which part?

@anna_0x thanks a lot for the awesome feedback! - We've now fixed the bug with Apple login being incorrectly blocked by Cloudflare, glad you were able to sign in after some time. - Thanks for the feedback about multi-device, see this comment above for what is supported https://www.producthunt.com/post... - In your specific case, Sign in with Apple from two distinct devices with the same Apple ID should indeed result in both devices sharing the same chat history. However at this time, it may take up to 1h for each device to update its local copy of the chat with messages from another device, so I don't recommend switching devices frequently at this point. We're aware of this issue and will improve it going forward. - The data we collect, who can access it and for what reasons is explained in our Privacy Policy at https://pi.ai/privacy which is prominently linked at the start of the chat and on the App Store - Thanks for the feedback regarding banning, I'll let the team know!

The Terms of Service, Privacy and Data policies make me a bit uncomfortable. Although it's wonderful that we're evolving fast towards tools and technology that actually help vulnerable people, not making it abundantly clear that the data isn't private, may be used for several purposes and is accessible by company employees is a step backwards to a good start.
