You need to read more, and I want to help...
Programming is great, but reading fiction has value too. It's scientifically proven to make you happier + improve your writing skills. But reading (and finding what to read) can take time. :)
That's why I'm introducing a free, easy solution for hackers, Morning Short. Morning Short is an email digest that sends out one amazing short story at 10AM every morning. It's free and it's easy.
I hope y'all will check it out.
@msitver Nice! any plans to expand into other types of stories? Are you purposefully sticking to just 1 story a day... with the current ecosystem of unlimited choice I like it! I'm bad at making some choices... even saving to Pocket I have loads of unread posts in there. This not giving me the power of choice may be a good thing 😂
@bentossell@msitver The "One Story" aspect is very important, because Morning Short is made for busy people. It's meant as an efficient way to read one great story a day. In the future I'd consider allowing people to opt for more than one story, but the default will always be one.
As for story types, it will mainly be standard short stories from well-known authors. I'm looking into doing theme days on the weekends (i.e Reader submission, 7-word stories, etc.). Thanks for adding us Ben!
@msitver I got the first story today, and wow. It was riveting, thought-provoking, and a bit saddening. It's a great idea for a newsletter (I write a few myself) and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's story. :)
@msitver Saw this tweet by @VioletaNedkova the other day and it immediately came to mind as possibly being helpful to you mentioned that reading is "scientifically proven to make you happier"
Looking forward to giving this a go, and happy being in Japan that it will likely be delivered at night, my usual fiction time.
p.s. Signing up with my kindle address, any idea if it will work?
Signed up and looking forwards to being sucked back into my reading habits.
It would be nice to change the time I receive the story. Is 10:00 relative to my time zone?
- side note on the site: I love the simplicity, but the text boxes for Name and Email are quite short
@mordzuber Right now it's all manual, so I send it out at 10AM EST. I've heard the scheduling question from a few people, and I'm looking into a solution.
Big fan of email newsletters and I'm looking forward to checking yours out. Might be nice to have a sample so people can know what kind of format to expect, as well as a better description of what type of short stories they are.
Also a minor comment: in the navbar, "Why To Join" sounds awkward.
