Hello! I'm the game designer for the game and very happy to be on Product Hunt. Just thought I give a quick summary of how I came up with the concept.
I was playing SimCity 2013 (after all their bugs were fixed) one night and thought it would be great if something like this was on mobile. But I wasn't thinking of the exact same game but one that would bring the fun elements of the game onto a mobile device. So I basically broke down the fun elements of the game: 1) planning ahead, 2) balancing tradeoffs, and 3) strategic thinking and started planning about how to bring them onto mobile.
I also wanted the game to be easy to pick so using a match-3 mechanic was a no-brainer.
Feel free to ask anything else about the game or how we did it.
Most difficult:
In the early stages, everything was hard as I was pondering these questions: What was the art style going to be? What are going to be game features for the soft launch? How much do I think the LTV of players will be?
There were just too many unknowns. For me, it was like an iceberg. At the top, there’s the question: “How do I create a fun and profitable game?” Underneath the water, all the other questions lie and some more that I didn’t know. To stay focused, I just tried solving one problem at a time, starting with “Can I create a fun game?”.
And just like Mark Watney from The Martian says: “If you solve enough problems, you get to go home”. In our case, if we solve enough problems, we get to survive and make another game.
Most Rewarding:
Seeing players’ reaction when we demo the game. It’s not for everyone but for the right ones, they see the comparisons to chess and Tetris. Also, it’s really rewarding seeing players with over 40 hours of gameplay on our beta builds.
