The word "kepo" is a slang word with roots from Southeast Asia (where I grew up). Basically means "really curious". This app is a twist on IG - users can discover content that was posted nearby. Sort of like IG meets Tinder.
Hi everyone. My name is Rey. In October 2019, I packed up my life in Vancouver and traveled around Asia before landing in a coding bootcamp in Hong Kong. The pandemic struck, and I stayed put there.
Finding something to do, I thought it would be a cool idea to create an Asian version of Nextdoor. Compounded with the experience of lockdown after lockdown, quarantine after quarantine, I felt distant and cut off from society, even though I was staying in one of the densest places on Earth.
After several iterations, tests, and pivots, I present to you kepo:
- kepo is a location-based social media app where your posts are discoverable by *where you post*, not *where you tag*.
- Users can browse content around their physical proximity, sort of like Instagram meets Tinder.
- You can also browse trending posts, or browse content from the people you follow.
- Filter by business or social content.
- To improve fairness in content discovery, posts are sorted by chronology with latest first (with a spam guard in place).
- Also has a private account mode, where only your approved followers can see your posts.
Use cases:
- Discover home businesses around you. Now you can discover that hidden gem of a baker living literally beside, above or below you.
- Showcase your business and make announcements to the neighborhood. Why still mess with paper posters, sidewalk stands, sign spinners, and wacky waving infla... you get the picture. Announce your "tonight only 2-for-1 special" on kepo.
- Announce and organize street protests on the fly... Ok no, just kidding. Discover happenings in your 'hood.
- Instagram got you down? Fret not, be your neighborhood creator/influencer instead.
- Last but not least, just for fun... :-)
