For millions of people with epilepsy, exposure to flashing lights at certain intensities or to certain visual patterns can trigger seizures. This is a bot bot that scans the web and reports content that is dangerous for people with photosensitive epilepsy.
Hey Product Hunt! 👋
It's been a while since I last launched something here and I can't lie, I'm nervous as hell!
Today, however, I am not launching a business venture, but a free product I have poured my soul in.
It's a bot that scans the web and reports any content that is dangerous for people with photosensitive epilepsy to view 🤖
Story 📕
In 2019 I stumbled upon an article that stated that a famous NYT journalist was attacked and suffered a seizure because someone on Twitter intentionally sent him a dangerous, animated GIF.
After seeing that nothing exists to help people with photosensitive epilepsy online, I decided to build something myself.
Long story short, after three crazy months of coding I had a chrome extension that worked like an AdBlocker. It scans the HTML and blocked any dangerous piece of content before even seeing it.
However, v1 ultimately failed 🤖
- People had to find out about the product
- People had to understand what it does
- People had to understand what a browser extension was
- Because every client would ping the API multiple times per second, the servers would constantly crash and I had to add a $5/mo price tag
- People had to install it on their browser
- It couldn't work on mobile apps
All of the above created too much friction for it to work. I am not funded or affiliated with any organization, non profit or corporation. It's just me by myself!
So, let me introduce v2 now! 🤖
- Scans the web by itself
- Scans the few most popular websites (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, etc) that amount to almost 90% of the internet's web traffic
- Instantly reports dangerous content
No need for anyone to know about it. No need for installation. It just works for millions of people. And it's free.
What's next 🔥
1. Open source the code
2. Find contributors to build more accessibility tools, like for people that suffer from blindness, deafness, Parkinson's, etc
I will be here all day so if you have any questions, let me know!
