What do you think? …

Ivan Mathy
I noticed while listening to my favorite record that my turntable was running fast, and I was shocked at how strange and convoluted it is to calibrate if you don't have those fancy little dots strobe light thingies. I thought I could probably find a better way to accomplish the same thing and started working on it in my spare time. My first attempt at making this concept work featured the accelerometer and required you to place your phone on the platter, recording how many times it spins in a minute. I quickly realized that 1) it's been done before by other apps on the App Store, and 2) asking people to put their a thousand dollars phone on a fast spinning slippery disk was just asking for trouble. I shelved the idea for over a year with it still stewing in the back of my mind. Then one day I had a total lightbulb moment: I figured out of a way to achieve the same effect, without putting your iPhone at risk by instead using the microphone. After a whole lot of testing, Grooved was born. It is a dead simple app, that does one single thing, and does it very well, for free. I like to call it a "Single Serving App". It reminds me of the early days of the App Store, where every once in a while, some super cool unitasker would come out, and I would be amazed at learning something new my iPhone could do. What a time to be alive! This is an app just for fun, so it doesn't record any data about you or your music. There is also an Android version currently in private beta, coming very soon to the Play Store. And before you ask, no, I still haven't fixed my turntable.
