ChainSafe Files is an intuitive and user friendly storage solution that provides unparalleled privacy and security. Files leverages IPFS and Filecoin and is end to end encrypted, so the only person who can see your files is you!
Hi! What exactly makes IPFS a reliable place to store data? I know that there and financial incentives and penalties for the "miners," but is there anything else built-in to the protocol? For example, does anything make sure that the data is stored redundantly in different locations?
@james_laslavic thanks for your interest! IPFS allows users to store and access their Files in a decentralized manner, which means that the whole system is censorship resistant and can be highly redundant. Filecoin leverages blockchain to provide an incentive for file storage and retrieval via the FIL token. However, IPFS alone is not a guarantee that your data will be stored reliably. Redundancy on IPFS needs to be provided by the user themselves, or a third party. That's where ChainSafe Files comes in.
Files uses IPFS for hot and flash storage and Filecoin for persistent storage and redundancy. This means the product can guarantee that each and every user file is backed up in multiple locations across the IPFS and Filecoin networks. Additionally, all user files are end to end encrypted on the client side so they can be uploaded to IPFS and Filecoin, through our system, without being exposed to anyone, including ChainSafe. We are posting this new product from ChainSafe to let people know what we are building and engage with our early users. All feedback is welcome, let us know what you think!
@colin_schwarz Hey! We have scheduled your post for May 20th, 2021 12:01 AM PDT so that it can get full 24 hours coverage and a better opportunity to engage with the community :)
I see that there is no fess been asked with most of the IPFS/Filecoin based storage services/apps: 1) Why is that? 2) how these services/apps manage to run without revenue our of the service (storage)? 3) why the price of Filecoin is always going south (down)....4) how you compare your service to Sia, Storj, Opacity & Slate?
Hi @coin_angel, I won't speculate about other teams but I can say that we plan to launch billing options and payment plans for ChainSafe Files shortly. I won't speculate on token prices either, Files will remain a compelling product regardless of the price of FIL or other tokens.
Files is a decentralized, privacy preserving, end to end encrypted storage product which is simple and intuitive to use. Sia and StorJ are storage networks in the same way that Filecoin is. They are not user facing products like Files. Opacity is encrypted but not decentralized. Slate is decentralized but not encrypted. ChainSafe Files is both decentralized and encrypted!
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
