Most of us know who Marie Curie is—the badass woman who did groundbreaking research in radioactivity and won not one but two Nobel Prizes: one in Physics in 1903 and one in chemistry in 1911.
But it turns out there have been 16 other women who have won Nobel’s in the sciences, and plenty more incredible women who have made major contributions in the STEM fields.
Through this Kickstarter @alonglastname is celebrating these women with a beautiful series of prints and raising money for the Association for Women in Science, which has been championing women in science, engineering, and math for over 40 years.
Thanks @jasonshen for hunting!
Like many people, I was feeling pretty upset after the election, and thinking a lot about how I get more involved. One of my friends had worked on the Hillary campaign and told me to pick a cause I care deeply about and support it in a way only I could.
That's what led me to do Beyond Curie. I wanted to celebrate the rich history of women kicking ass in STEM fields, to show that our world was built by brilliant people, both male and female and of all backgrounds, and to inspire the next generation of young women to become scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.
I turned to Kickstarter to create a community around the project, and it's been great to have people sharing their ideas and stories. Many educators have reached out sharing how they'll use the posters to inspire young women in their schools and events. Some backers are planning to attend The March for Science happening in April in DC so I've created a custom series for anyone to download and print. Finally, Fast Company did a really great piece on the project last week: http://fastcodesign.com/3068228/...
