I would be curious to know how you are addressing the AMVA's rules on requiring any Vet giving consultations to have seen the pet or have access to the pets records? It has even gone so far as one Vet in Texas likely to loose his license for publishing a news letter that gave medical advice. We looked hard at this area. As of now, the AVMA is pretty clear that to give advice you must have seen the animal or have access to the animal's medical records. I am curious on how does your bot works within those rules.

@gizboz1 Great question. The chat bot isn't making a diagnosis (or giving specific advice). It is simply a triage decision.....should the pet see a vet or not.

@joewaltman I think that is splitting hairs...to give guidance on whether to see a vet or not, some sort of diagnosis is being made. You may not determine the actual issue, but you are starting to say its not these things so Fido is ok or it could be these problems and Fido needs to see a doctor. Thats smells like a diagnosis to me. This really gets to be a problem is the bot says no need to see a vet and Fido dies. The AMVA has taken its position because of two primary issues with things like this: 1) people give inaccurate and incomplete assessments and 2) Fido cannot speak for him/herself. If you look at the case in Texas, giving guidance on whether to see a vet or not is giving more "guidance" than what was being put in the Vet's newsletter.

@gizboz1 @joewaltman No different to a receptionist helping a caller determine whether to come in to a clinic or not - this is well-trodden territory

@katherine_van_ekert @joewaltman Just because this might happen does not mean it is a good thing. Also, making the judgement call of yes, bring your pet in, is always fine as the animal will see a doctor. Lastly, a bot is not a human. There are limits around the questions, interpretation of information, etc. of a bot. To say a bot is the same as a receptionist is very far fetched. A human making a judgement call is VERY different than a bot.

@gizboz1 @joewaltman Thanks for your input, and you're not wrong. I encourage you to test this out for yourself - you'll quickly discover that all roads lead to Rome (we've intentionally opted for hyperconservative responses). As a veterinarian with a regulatory background I have no qualms with the approach that VetPronto is taking here.

I’m a fan of the team that built this bot, Vet Pronto. It’s a great way to figure out quickly if you need to schedule a vet appointment immediately, or if you’re just being a dog mom hypochondriac (guilty as charged).

Great idea! This is a really useful time (and potentially live) saver.
