The tagline suggests 'another' todo list app though it is quite unique and different. Nice little extension to my toolkit.
@rrhoover: For easy reference (or to disregard) category-specific products, do you plan to introduce some categories for products, such as todo's, or social, or phone apps? :)
Hey! Thanks for the up votes friends. My team and I have been working hard to create this chrome extension with the intent of creating a beautiful U/X that is extremely simple to use. I started Tier5 when I had my own problem with my last start-up. I needed to import boxes from china and had no idea how to do something like this. I am part of so many affinity groups that it frustrated me that I could be connected to so many amazing and successful people and still not know who to reach out to for help. That is why we chose to create a to do list that actively searches through your network for people who can help. What took me 3 weeks to find someone who can help will now take you seconds.
My favorite part of the technology behind Tier5's TODO list is how incredibly smart we are making it. By early fall, the extension will be able to understand sub-tasks. For example, if you input a task "Write a book", Tier5 will break down the necessary steps in writing a book, be it: finding a publisher, an editor, going through Amazon, etc. Then Tier5 will find people that can help in each stage. We hope that this process of holding your hand through the process would help people gain some traction and ease the starting process.
I look forward to answering any questions and hearing feedback! ^_^
@jamasenr Hey Jamasen! i got some q's:
1) Who are the other major players in the space / why have so many failed?
2) How are you guys going to monetize? Seems like a hard space. What's the real business potential here?
3) Will this work in the shower? :P
@eriktorenberg sure no problem!
1) TL;DR: Momentum, Wunderlist, & Evernote are key competitors. There is only one new tab page which makes it prime real estate with high competition. To do lists don't need a redesign, they need reinvention. Thats what we do.
Longer version: As @rrhoover pointed out, Momentum is a big competitor. With a head start of over 220K downloads and the go-to productivity app for early adopters, they are clearly competition. The difficult part about being a Chrome New Tab extension is that the "New Tab" is prime real-estate. You are always opening new tabs and we want to be in the middle of that action. The down side is that you can only have ONE new tab extension at a time.
Other competitors are Wunderlist, Todoist, Evernote but I believe our true value proposition is the ability to utilize your network's potential to its fullest. Many have failed in the to do list category because they are only redesigning an age old tool with out innovation. They all have methods of sharing tasks across platforms, ability to share tasks for collaboration, and some new look. The problem is that productivity tools like the to do list are supposed to help you get things done. That's what we do. Spend less time looking for how to do something or who to ask and more time actually doing it.
2) TL;DR: We license our technology to companies to better place their employees to optimize team cohesion and efficiency.
Longer Version: Tier5 is at it's heart a data analytics company. The technology behind the todo list is constantly working to index the social web. What this means is that we have methods of aggregating all public information about people with just a name and identifier (like a company or university). With this information along side the TODO list we see the opportunity to predict behavioral change. If the tasks you are working on have a common theme, we can see how that theme changes over time thus giving us the ability to show you who you should connect to next. This technology is extremely valuable to companies that focus on team cohesion and culture. We plan to license out our platform to companies so that employees can see who, within their company, can help. On the company side, they can understand how employees change over time (past the resume) and better organize teams to optimize cohesion and efficiency. We plan to initially work with community based companies like ImpactHub and WeWork to start. There are many ways we plan to monetize but for now we are focused on making our users happy and making our matching algorithm second to none.
3) I hope this could help with your shower problem: http://www.myaquanotes.com/
Hope that helps!
@jamasenr as someone who has spent a lot of time in this market, your key competitor isn't any of those companies. It's people not making to do lists :)
How do you feel about the privacy component? We actually explored the public task/notes route quite a bit at Fetchnotes but ultimately decided not to pursue it. Generally we found that while most tasks are benign, there are some that people don't want public (for example, dealing with a confidential lawsuit, or medication, etc.) and if they can't put everything in an app like this they tend not to use it for anything. Well tried to do this in 2012 and pivoted into Lootsy recently. I think if you focus on work and people's work colleagues, though, you can get around that.
I've thought a lot about this stuff - feel free to get in touch with me if you're interested in chatting more!
@alexschiff Thanks for the feedback! I agree with you with the "private" tasks that people create. We will not make any tasks available for friends to see until we implement a feature that allows you to create tasks for work and personal. Our goal is to make things as easy for the user as possible. So to address your sensitive information issue, we have been working on a way to detect when something is "sensitive" information and ask you whether or not to make the task private. Once that is complete and tested is when we will allow users to see others tasks. I would love to talk more, send me an email at jamasenr@gmail.com
