An Internet that empowers equality, freedom, and sustainability. An open ecosystem. Game-changing technology. Distributed in 21 countries and expanding.
In 2016, ThreeFold identified the need for a new, upgraded, and more-secure internet – a truly peer-to-peer internet that empowers equality (access), autonomy to its users, and sustainability.
Today, independent ThreeFold Farmers have collectively built the largest distributed peer-to-peer grid of internet capacity in the world, live with more than 40,000,000 GB of capacity and 15,000 CPU cores, and stretching across more than 20 countries.
And today, ThreeFold launched the second generation of the ThreeFold Grid along with the ThreeFold Peer-to-Peer Cloud and the ThreeFold SDK.
The ThreeFold Grid is powered by the ThreeFold Token, the digital currency of this new internet. Tokens are generated only when capacity is added to the ThreeFold Grid.
ThreeFold and its collective ecosystem of partners believes in a green and conscious peer-to-peer internet available everywhere and owned by everyone – across geographical and cultural borders, empowering people to be autonomous, and providing equal chances to learn, partake and succeed.
@therealsjr Thanks for the hunt! I'm super honored to be involved in this project, and to now be introduced to the Product Hunt audience. Think the community will really dig what we are working on. It's incredible technology that is flipping the existing Internet on its head – but more than that it's purpose-driven.
With everything going on in the world today, I think it's important that we look at all systems and one of those is the Internet. Why is not accessible to more people (today only half the world)? Why do large corporations own and profit off of our data? And why does the Internet need to use so much dang energy? (Hint: it doesn't.)
I'd really encourage anybody to visit the 'Why' page of our website to learn more about, well, why we do what we do. And if you're into the tech, our wikis are for you. (You can find both in the nav bar at threefold.io).
Anyway, I'm here to answer questions! Thanks for taking the time to dig in. I hope you enjoy! Wishing you a wonderful Friday.
We are very excited to present the Threefold grid to the public.
We have been working hard trying to bring another piece in the puzzle that is the decentralized internet.
The Threefold grid aims to bring a solution to the centralization of the internet infrastructure.
Because decentralization needs to happen at each layer of the stack, Threefold has created a peer-to-peer cloud platform where the hardware is owned by the people and made available to everyone through a network of autonomous server all interconnected.
I personally hope we can become a go to platform for any projects that wants to bring the web to a more free, open and decentralized state.
The version we present today is the second iteration of this idea. It's powered by 0-OS V2, the result of a couple of years of research in autonomous IT.
I hope you will like it :-)
What does ”40,000,000 GB of capacity and 15,000 CPU cores, and stretching across more than 20 countries” translate into in more ’human terms’ i.e. number of users/websites/relevant example of your choice?
@jaakko_timonen1 Good question! There's no simple answer. :) The reality is that websites come in all shapes and sizes. Facebook, for example, takes up a lot more space than a simple blog.
Here's a frame of reference: From a storage standpoint, this amount of capacity could store roughly 20-30 Billion photos (depending on photo quality) on today's Internet. With the ThreeFold solution, storage algorithms are much more efficient, which means more photos for the same amount of capacity.
Basically, a lot. And we will be adding more as we go, this is just the beginning. We're focused on spreading capacity around the world including to emerging regions to allow people who currently don't have access to critical tools (e.g. communication, storage) that come with the internet. All this with the advantages of owning your own data. And better for the planet as well.
There are a lot of amazing projects as examples of what is coming at consciousinternet.org.
Hope this helps a bit. Definitely encourage you to dig in more to the site and the wikis.
