ThinkBoxAI: My Journey from CLI to a Full-Fledged AI Desktop Client
It all started with a simple need - I wanted to use OpenAI’s paid ChatGPT without committing to a monthly subscription. I built a quick CLI tool to interact with the API, allowing me to send prompts and get responses on demand. It worked, but it had limitations: no local history, no image generation previews, and changing settings meant modifying the code manually.
Over time, I kept refining the CLI tool, adding improvements to make it more efficient. But I quickly realized something—it was still a command-line tool, which wasn’t the most user-friendly experience. I wanted a seamless, intuitive way to interact with AI, where I could chat, generate images, tweak settings easily, and even manage multiple API providers in one place.
That’s when I decided to build ThinkBoxAI—a cross-platform desktop application that brings the power of AI directly to users without forcing them into costly subscriptions. ThinkBoxAI integrates OpenAI’s API for chat and image generation while giving users complete control over their API usage with a pay-as-you-go model.
Now, it’s fully functional, offering a smooth and interactive experience. But this is just the beginning. I’m planning to expand ThinkBoxAI by adding support for more AI providers, making it a truly versatile AI client for users worldwide.

Currently, ThinkBoxAI is designed for individual users (B2C), where each user installs it on their personal PC. However, users can share their OpenAI API key across multiple instances if they choose to. Each user has a unique license key, ensuring independent access and control.
ThinkBoxAI also includes a built-in license management system, allowing users to unlink their license from one computer and activate it on another at any time.
For teams or multi-user setups, multiple license keys can be purchased, enabling different users to access the tool with their own licenses while using a shared OpenAI API key if desired.
Looking ahead, there are plans to introduce business (B2B) support, where team owners will be able to manage multiple licenses centrally and control API token distribution for their teams.
