Hi Product Hunt! 👋 You ever feel like you spend hours browsing the web but can't quite pinpoint where the time goes? I'm here to introduce a Chrome extension that I personally developed — SurfPal. It aims to assist users in improving their web browsing habits through quantitative means. As that classic saying goes, "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it." SurfPal embodies this philosophy by meticulously tracking the time users spend on different websites. This function not only aids in optimizing online behavior but also satisfies curiosity about where time is actually going on the internet. Compared to other similar extensions, SurfPal boasts more powerful and intuitive data analysis capabilities, more flexible time restriction rules, and a more user-friendly UI. Additionally, it leverages Google Drive to synchronize data, ensuring that users can maintain and access their browsing records effortlessly, even when switching devices. My motivation for creating SurfPal comes from a belief: it's only through measurement that we can gain a deeper understanding and control of our time. Accurately capturing our web surfing habits is the first step towards improvement. SurfPal is here to help you take that step. I warmly invite everyone to try SurfPal and welcome your feedback. I look forward to this tool helping you make more efficient use of your time. Thank you!

Wow, SurfPal sounds like a game-changer for managing web browsing habits! I love the idea of using quantitative data to gain insights into my online activity. The integration with Google Drive for seamless synchronization is a fantastic feature that sets SurfPal apart from other extensions. The intuitive UI and flexible time restriction rules are just what I need. Can't wait to try it out and see how it helps optimize my browsing time. Congrats on the launch, @WildSeeder!

This is a cool idea. Just curious I’ve def heard of some websites that are similar to yours in regards to tracking and limiting time on websites/apps, what makes you different? Congrats on the launch.

@benjamin_sloutsky Thanks! This is a very common need. In the systems I've used, Android, iOS, and macOS all have built-in support for tracking screen time by app, but it only goes as far as the app level. I spend about 8 hours a day using Chrome, yet I have no idea how much time I spend on each website. I think this is a feature Chrome should add in the future. There have been similar extensions before, and I've tried some of them. However, they didn't quite satisfy me—some were too outdated, and others had a lot of features but poor user experience. That's why I developed SurfPal. It significantly improves on other extensions in terms of feature design, user experience, and performance. Additionally, it includes data synchronization to meet the needs of people like me who use two computers.

Congrats! I needed this. Thank you! As @busmark_w_nika has mentioned, what exactly are the pro features? Would be nice to see the difference between the free version and the paid.

@chandula Thanks! The majority of SurfPal's features are available for free, with a few limitations: you can only set up to 5 time limit rules and create up to 5 website groups. Also, exporting data with hourly details and enabling data synchronization aren't available in the free version. But not to worry, for light users, these features should be more than enough. And for users who find themselves wanting more, a one-time upgrade to the Pro edition grants lifetime unlimited access to everything SurfPal has to offer.

Enjoying the application Great application! I’ve purchased the pro version, but now I miss the sync option for MS Edge and/or Opera. Are there any plans for this or a known timeline?"

Thanks for your support and for going Pro! The sync feature for those browsers is coming really soon! It will be included in version 1.6.0 update, which is scheduled to roll out within the next two weeks.

I discovered it yesterday and since then I have permanently opened it in my tab. I think that this website (SurfPal) plugging should be also counting the time for itself because I constantly check my time in the dashboard :D
