@thisisjorik Just got word back from David Vale (the designer). Here's what he had to say:
When I was thinking about the design, my first thought was to create something really minimal and elegant, something that wouldn't distract you from what is important, the sound. That's the main reason why the site feels very neutral and a bit "dark". I wanted people to look at the panorama images as a guide, not as their main focus, so as you navigate between the locations, there isn't a big contrast between the scenes as happens with the sound environment.
For references, I checked some jazz album covers, art-deco posters and a lot of different typographies that were really cool but also available as a webfont. I guess the final design is a mix of all these different elements.
