Something In Common

Something In Common

The playlist game.

Part trivia, part listening comprehension. Every song in each playlist has something in common. It could be the instrumentation. It could be the lyrical content. It could be something about the artists. It could be how the songs got famous.

What do you think? …

This is a game my wife and I play on road trips, so during quarantine we decided to polish it up a bit and make it public. So far we've found that some people love it and play every week, but the majority of people struggle to identify even one answer. Let me know what you think. We know the answer validation could use a little work, so could definitely use recommendations on how to make that better.

It is a good idea. You can keep expanding it by having more playlists, but also simply it by having connections between two songs rather than entire lists. Some feedback to consider: - Possibility of NOT showing the song lists but merely playing the audio? Maybe the "HINT" could reveal the song titles, then another hint could reveal the artists too? Then a third and final hint could give a hint of the reason why they are connected? - Maybe change the Icons so they don't give the answer away. I immediately knew one of the answers just from the Icon before I clicked it, and sure enough I was right and I live in the UK and the link was a US-related answer. - The Answer section needs a little work. I guessed the answer but didn't give the exact terminology it required. The first Answer it said was completely wrong (even though the answer was 2 words and I gave the first word) and my second attempt was both the correct words and it suggested I was "almost right". Maybe offer a 4 answer multi-choice option would work better? I think that if this was developed as a fun music quiz app that can be scored on the answers and the score shared virally. Where you have to guess from 4 answers the link between 2 or more songs (by listening to them initially, and then discovering the song title/artist/clue to the answer via hints) then it could be a really good app. Particularly if you add advertising to it for a revenue stream. I hope that gives some things to think about for any future versions.

@exopaul Hey Paul thanks for all the feedback. Your first point actually gets at what the original idea for the game was, which was more of a "progressive reveal" starting with the audio, then the tracklisting, then some art and hints, and the user gets fewer points the longer it takes them/the more clues they receive. And we might still do that! But for v1 we decided to use as much "off the shelf" shortcuts as possible (the spotify player, WP theme, etc.) just to see if there's anything to this idea. The icons are funny. I'm pretty sure I know the one you're talking about, but you'd be surprised how few people get that one right. I agree they can potentially take the fun out of it by giving you the answer before you've ever even clicked play. It's a fine line between abstract/clever and abstract/inscrutable. The answer section for sure needs some work. We'll definitely keep focusing on that.

Super well thought out and a lot more challenging than I thought it would be
