Showgoers is the browser extension that will keep the good habits of watching a movie with your friends or with your loved ones over a distance. If you have a valid Netflix account and Showgoers extension you can create your movie party with a synchronized movie and chat!
Thanks :D I'm thrilled to see that what was originally just made for me and my long-distance girlfriend to watch movies together has turned out to be useful for other people too. I guess we got tired of the whole routine of "press play in 3, 2, 1", haha.
@eremzeit 2 years later and you're still fueling long distance relationships with your app :) coming from one of those people being who use this multiple times a week to get the closet to "hanging out" possible
I love this. When I wrote for Mashable and then GigaOm, none of the editors agreed with my predictions that movie and TV viewing would go social (it was '08 & 09 so I didn't understand why they didn't get it. I wasn't predicting flying cars!) So I wrote published my own pieces on my blog later on.... http://dorianocarta.com/socialvi... was one of them... when I used products that are all gone now...synctube....CBS had social rooms....which were fun.....Meebo rooms had the best though where you played any video/movie and you invited friends to a group chat. Loved it. I always had packed rooms and the comments during the movies were hilarious... here are some more...they called me NostroPaimus...http://dorianocarta.com/socialme... and even about watching sports together... http://dorianocarta.com/social-s...
I do hope Netflix, Hulu and others use this technology and add the ability to group chat if you want... some just want to focus on the show/film/game.
@paisano I agree. When I went looking for this solution I was surprised that nobody had built it yet (or built it the way I wanted it). What I've released here is me trying to distill the idea of social watching into the most basic use case of social watching, that is, just having the players sync up. The simplicity of the link-sharing scheme allows for so many different use cases. One that I've just observed in the wild is somebody tweeting the shortened invite URL for their sync watching session. Spontaneous twitter watch parties :D
@eremzeit@paisano I seem to remember that when I attended my very first Microsoft conference, they showed a demo using their (then new) Silverlight technology to do this very same thing with Netflix, and they had a real-time chat feature as well. Needless to say it didn't get much traction. Hopefully your implementation will have more legs!
