Capture full color 3D scans with TrueDepth devices (iPhone X/XS/XR). Before Scandy Pro, the brave new world of 3D was only for 3D game designers and digital artists. With Scandy Pro, everyone can create 3D content. Easy enough for novices, powerful enough for professionals.
I have question !!! It’s very important for me. I think, that ScandyPro can scan little objects , if we use some other stuff like linses. Is it true and can u think about this proublem? For example I need real angles on gears. And now I can’t to scan little gears. But if u make this idea to life... it’s will be greate. Mb use 3D printer and linses from Ali ))). I try it by my self with home magnifying glass... not work)). 3D scan was flat. I think it’s because wrong glass. So I hope u can help!!!
@warades We love the idea of using Scandy Pro for small-object scanning. We’re constantly looking for solutions to increase the resolution of our meshes. From magnifying glasses to mirrors, we’re working to find a way to attain finer detail meshes without jeopardizing the accuracy of the model. Currently Scandy Pro’s detail is limited to the hardware capabilities of the device's TrueDepth sensor - as improved hardware is released on newer devices, Scandy Pro will attain better accuracy with smaller objects. We’ll keep experimenting using optics to capture smaller details and keep everyone in the loop on our failures and successes as we do!
If you find something that works, we hope you let us know, too 😉
It appears as this only works in conjunction with the depth sensor on iPhoneX. Is there plans to make it ubiquitous in other devices without depth sensors?
@alan_smithson1 Scandy's forte is working with depth sensors for object scanning. we have worked in photogrammetry and with depth from dual cameras, so that is a possibility at some point. One advantage of using the depth sensor is that it is (relatively) easy to keep the mesh processing on device instead of pushing processing to the cloud. That also allows users to scan without worrying about where their data is being processed or stored. Another advantage is that the scans are fast and accurate. We see a trend of more mobile devices building in depth sensors (iPhones XS, XS Max, XR, 2018 iPad Pro), so we will likely focus on that right now. As soon as there are a critical mass of Android devices with depth sensors (like the Huawei Mate Pro 20), we will relaunch Scandy Pro for Android.
@alan_smithson1 Great question! To follow up on @scandyco answer with some more details and visuals, we are able to scan well within 1mm accuracy for handheld size objects with Scandy Pro using the TrueDepth camera. Checkout this example: https://imgur.com/a/djm408k I used Scandy Pro to measure my espresso cup for getting a tamp, because you know coffee... Conveniently, I also happen to have a digital caliper so we can all easily see the accuracy of our scan relative to physical measurements. We round the in app measurements of Scandy Pro to 1mm because we don't want people thinking that we are sub-millimeter accurate all the time, its depends on the size of the object being scanned.
Photo based scanning is great for larger scale scenes on consumer devices due to calibration standards and tracking tolerances. You can get realllllly fine accuracy and resolution doing photogrammetry with a professional setup using a field calibrated camera and studio lighting. We are evaluating some different solutions for doing photo based scanning for larger scenes where centimeter accuracy is acceptable.
Thanks for the great question!
I think this has been the best mobole scanning app since 123d Catch!
It has impvoed a lot since it first was released each time making it easier to use.
I‘m a fine artist working in in multiple disciplines and this app has alllowed me to easily scan objects for 3d printing and digital spaces As well as 3d records for fine art sculpting.
I also work in large scale 3d scanning(people) and it’s its great to be able to see both large scale pro hardware versus mobile scanning.
It’s also great to create medium to large size assets for virtual space.
I will continue to scan using the app and can’t wait to see what improvements come in 2019.
Pros:
Very easy to use. Good improvements. Love the sketch fab integration and the ability to export your scans for in-depth clean up.
Cons:
Due to hardware it‘s difficult to scan very small objects. would be great to have a way to clean up/edit some of the geometry in app.
Thanks, Hector! We love seeing what you do on Instagram with Scandy Pro. We'll continue to make improvements to make it easier, faster, and more fun to use.
Hey @hector_gomez1 thanks for the feedback! We absolutely agree about the cleanup of geometry in app. The decimate, smooth, and plane crop are some good basic fundamental tools that we've had for quite some time (dating back to the Phab2Pro days). Here’s a quick screen record I did just to make sure you know the tools are there and to see my workflow for using them: https://youtu.be/sz089D2xstQ Then take a measurement in AR just because its very important I know how long the handle of the espresso maker is!
We're going to be adding a poisson filter soon for making water tight models. We’re still working out a good UI/UX still for cleaning up the random floating noise quicker and easier than plan cropping. That UX on a mobile phone is tricky and we'd welcome any good examples of ways to accomplish this for inspiration!
Also, we are aware of the bug that got introduced in v1.5.0 that causes decimate to crash some times on the second or third time. A fix will be live for that tomorrow or Wednesday, 🤞it will have the poisson filter for making water tight too!
