Hey makers @mvolpe and @eilatyoel - could you tell us a little bit about ransomware, how it compares to other security threats? I'm curious why you specifically decided to tackle this one.
@pseudovirtual Great question. Our enterprise solution addresses most of the big threats to any business from traditional malware to ransomware to the really advanced stuff (like nation states hacking in nearly undetectable ways).
Ransomware is very interesting for two reasons:
(a) it affects everyone from your grandmother to public institutions like police departments and schools, through to huge corporations
(b) it is a business and the primary motivation is money (not hacktivism or stealing of IP)
If you want to make a big dent in ransomware as a business you need to make it much less profitable. The best way to do this is to have as many people as possible have great protection against it so the bad guys have a much harder time infecting people and therefore have to work a lot harder to make less money. If you only provide protection to enterprises, you will not make a big impact in the overall problem.
So we decided to make the product free for everyone so hopefully we can change the game when it comes to the overall ransomware business model.
I wanted to call out something to all the Mac users here - the product is only for Windows at this time (they are the largest pool of people targeted by ransomware). However our enterprise product includes support for Windows, Mac and Linux and a lot of us here at Cybereaosn use Macs, so if RansomFree is successful we would be able to offer Mac and other versions in the future.
