Tells the time with a brand new poem every minute, every single day, composed by ChatGPT. It’s sometimes profound, and sometimes weird, and very occasionally it fibs about what the actual time is to make a rhyme work.
I eagerly await the physical version of Poem/1, and in the meantime the virtual version of it has become my favorite spatial widget. Thanks to Matt Webb for making a variant for Translucent ❤️
I shared a hack of my AI clock on Twitter back in 2023 -- and never expected it to go viral. It ended up in The Verge and the New York Times. So I thought I should make it?
Manufacturing connected hardware as an indie is wild, but I've done it before. I'm collaborating with London industrial designers Approach Studio and hardware engineer Tom Armitage, and Poem/1 is the result. It's on Kickstarter right now.
It's gorgeous but ALSO you may like this: you can change the backend server URL from the Wi-Fi config screen, and I'll be publishing the protocol between the device and the server. I love the poems and we're composing 0.5 millions/year... but if you get bored or I get zapped by aliens, then I want you to know there's an escape hatch for hackers. (I feel like I want all of my connected hardware to work like this.)
p.s. if you'd like to see a live virtual demo of how Poem/1 tells the time, check out https://poem.town where the hero image updates in real-time!
