Everyone in Europe is feeling the urge to move away from the hyperscalers and their data-hungry platforms. That’s why we built PixelUnion — a European alternative for storing your photos securely on European soil.
We leverage the open-source by running a fork of the popular Immich project to store your memories. Between this awesome software and our extensive experience in cloud storage and the engineering field, we believe we’ve created a great alternative for your Google and iCloud photos.
Every user gets a private environment — your photos are yours, and only you can access them. Within your space, a personal facial recognition AI is trained to automatically organize your photos based on the people in them.

This is a great idea!
The only barrier for me would be transferring all my existing photos from Google Photos to PixelUnion. Is there an easy way to handle that?

The great thing about PixelUnion is that it uses Immich as it's core. The community around Immich is pretty big and they have produced some great tools and guides to get your photos out of the Google Photos platform using Google Takeout and into Immich (or PixelUnion). One of the best out there is the open-source: https://github.com/simulot/immich-go
Although not 100% user-friendly yet (it only has an CLI interface), good enough the the tech savvy early adopter. Let us know what you think!

Congrats on launching PixelUnion! It’s great to see a privacy-focused, Europe-based alternative to the big hyperscalers. I really like the idea of a private environment and personal facial recognition AI. I’m curious—how do you handle data portability if a user wants to move their photos elsewhere in the future? Also, are there plans to add features like shared albums or family accounts? Excited to see how PixelUnion grows!

@qilong thanks for the comment! The great thing about PixelUnion is that it uses Immich as it's core and this has a great community around it and has many features. From the get go we support the creation of multiple sub-users in your own environment. This means that you can invite family and friends to use the environment and you can share albums between them.
For now, we don't have an automated Google Takeout like feature, but users are able to download the files from the web interface and retrieve their original files. Alternatively we could support a download like feature that could have users migrate from our hosted fork of Immich and enable them to import it into a self-hosted version.
