Unlock the full power of Youtube to learn languages! ➤ understand more with translated subtitles ➤ remember mountains of words with Spaced Repetition Odyssée (odyssee.jp) is available for French and iOS; more languages later!
Hey PH, I'm Yohann, the founder of Odyssée. I'm a former French private tutor, and I love learning languages myself. 10 years ago I self-taught Japanese to a rather advanced level, and Chinese to intermediary level. I'm currently living in Tokyo and I love it.
The approach I used to learn Japanese and Chinese is known as "massive immersion" or "comprehensible input".
The idea is that you first focus on watching a lot of TV series (or Youtube), you read a lot of books or random stuff that you like on the Internet, and you systematically add all (or most) new words to a Spaced Repetition software (usually Anki) to remember them on the long term. You can easily learn 1000+ words / month like that, it's extremely effective.
The major problems with that method, are that 1) Anki is really hard to use, and 2) you still need to create thousands of bilingual sentence flashcards yourself, which is insanely time-consuming.
So I wanted to make an app that integrates all the tools in one place (Youtube + dictionary + Anki + huge sentence deck for your target language) and makes the whole method much simpler to use.
Odyssée will help you acquire lots of vocabulary, and spend more time immersed in native video content.
Since I'm working solo now, I had to focus on French first, but if there is demand for it, I'll definitely expand that to more languages and Android/web later!
I would really love to get feedback from anyone currently learning languages, or knowing more about your own experiences!
Also feel free to ask any question, I'll do my best to help you!
Indeed you've introduced me the Anki SRS a few years ago and I have been happy about it. I'm still using it for Japanese and Chinese.
Now, I think the missing part in my language learning is that exact point you got: being able to feed my language learning with real-life content, the kind that can be found in videos.
At the same time, being able to record each new keyword into the SRS is the best idea to remember it forever.
Gathering those elements into the same app is a guarantee of ease of use.
I would really appreciate to get the Chinese learning version of your product as soon as it gets out!
