Obitt is a social platform that allows people to gather and share memories, experiences and stories of their loved once for posterity! Obitt's free, perpetual, socially gratifying and collaborative Obits are the ultimate digital cemetery!
When my father passed on in 2022, exactly two (2) weeks after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer I was devastated beyond words. With the constant thoughts of my dad that I had put to paper, I struggled to find a place where I could keep and share all the memories, beautiful family pictures and stories for posterity. The existing social platforms weren't ideal lest it all get swept and swamped by the latest trends. The paid platforms weren't appealing and limited, save to say they are expensive for my family and less appealing and interactive for the digital era we live today. Getting calls from his old workmates and social circles weeks and months after his death was the last stride, isn't there a better way to quickly let a loved one social circle on death? As I tried to think through and come to terms with my father's passing, Obitt struck!
Obitt allows for the creation of FREE, perpetual Obits in seconds allowing family and friends to share stories, experiences and pictures for posterity. The socially collaborative tools make it socially gratifying and redefine obituaries (Obits) as we know them. Obitt is built with features that you are already accustomed to on other social networks with few more that make it your ideal and ultimate digital cemetery!
This is an amazing idea.
Few questions I’m genuinely curious about and can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
1. What’s your plan on growing the user base? Who’s your target audience, how you’re going to reach these people? The topic is very sensitive and complicated because I imagine you’re trying to do a good thing for people going through the worst human experience imaginable.
P.S. as a Ukrainian, I‘ve seen non-profit organisations emerging now that are set to document the victims of Russian invasion. I think they might benefit from a product like yours.
2. Are you planning on monetising Obitt? And if yes, what’s your plan?
@kay_larina thank you so much, I appreciate this:-
1. So yes, the target market is everyone, we see this as a digital cemetary i.e a Facebook for dead people, where in time it serves as a platform for posterity, where family and friends would easily access to see pictures, stories and memories of their loved once. We think of it as Wikipedia on hybrid where we can find a little story about lost loved once.
For now growth will be organic, we intend to engage and partner with funeral homes mainly as they will get value through visibility as curators, getting commissions on fundraising and flowers.
So we have noted the social media platforms available now make it hard to grieve, posts will easily get lost in seconds. We have made features that make curation easy like clipboards (think of it more like Pinterest boards) as well as Topics/ tags(e.g Russo-Ukrainian War as a tag, will curate all victims obits) per each Obit which makes it easy to curate and document related obituaries by the click of a button.
2. Obitt is a freemium product, we intend to make our money through following:-
- commission on flower sales
- commission on fundraising campaigns
- Paid services (Will-writing, encrypted data storage)
- Cross-selling (life insurance etc )
- targeted advertising (you will notice as much our main catergory are people, we do have many other sub categories)
@pride_mwapamba fascinating idea! I added you on LinkedIn, we're kind of swamped with work right now (I'm sure you can relate with the launch), but would LOVE to do an interview with you and learn more about what you do and plan to do with Obitt.
Just one additional question RE: monetizing:
have you thought about selling a digital life-insurance for those who want to curate their digital footprint after they die?
that could be an easier sell than approaching people in grief, and also less ethic dilemmas and issues with crossing the boundaries or being disrespectful.
@kay_larina thank you once again, yes sure I will be ready when you are ready :)!
Life Insurance - that's a good idea, i would love to catch up with you on how we can structure it. So one of the features/product we are trying to build is a Death API that basically helps check all your digital footprint and curate it all on our platform. If you try create an Obit right now you will see the option to add social handles (Twitter, FB, IG etc) of the deceased, we reckon that memorialization is something that the digital platforms are still lacking/ struggling as you are bound to run into a dead friend whether on FB, Twitter, IG etc and we want to take the initiative through our API to power social media and related industries on deceased estate including digital footprint. So yes that's a good one Kay, thank you let's do catch up!
@kay_larina Really impressive idea! Would it be okay to include your product in my directory (producthunt.com/products/wikiaitools)? Check it out and let me know!
