Newsriver is a news ticker for your desktop. Add RSS feeds from your favorite sources and have them flow across your screen. Feeds update automatically so you are always up to date with happenings across the world.
Newsriver is labor of love that started in 2011 as a Safari browser extension that scrolled the news of the world above your internet. I relaunched it in 2022 as a full fledged Mac app with the goal of making it the best in its category.
I don't know why this doesn't get more attention but this is a must have for all desktops, especially ultra wide ones. I tried to build it with swift but couldn't and this is the exact product I had imagined. Congrats. One minor complaint might be is the monetization model. The take-away of the product is its simplicity, therefore it doesn't need new features. So I believe it would be detrimental to have a subscription model.
@hsnkts Thanks for your comment! The core of Newsriver will always be free since the whole point of the app is to increase the flow of information in your digital world and I want it to have the widest possible reach.
The subscription model is admittedly a bit of an experiment, but one that I wanted to make as painless as possible ($10 USD a year is not too big of an ask). However, I am willing to continue to experiment with other models to see what would be the best fit for the app.
@elevenfiftyfour it is a bit too much in 3rd world countries:) Maybe a localized pricing strategy would benefit the app more. Even though I said no new features needed, I decided some would be nice after trying for a couple of hours. Here are some thoughts if you like:
-Stop the ticker on mouse hover.
-Flash news can flash literally to get attention.
-New items, clicked items, old items should be in different colors or read items can disappear completely.
-Limiting the time frame such as the last 24 hours may result in more fresh news.
-Mac OS look up function(without opening a webpage) can be integrated when clicked on an item and to speed this up the app can calculate the likelihood of an item to be clicked based on user history and mouse hover and load the page in advance.
-A small icon of the news source can be less tiring on the eye and makes it easy to distinguish different items at a glance.
and some dreamy features:
-Prioritize and colorize category or individual items based on freshness, keywords, user data and sentiment.
-Slow down the ticker when a new item is visible.
-Speed up the ticker in minuscule amounts everyday to make the user to be able to read faster day by day.
Looking back now and 10 bucks don't seem much now:)
Thanks again for your effort and your app.
