Nearly puts you in group threads based on where you are. You'll get notifications from the nearest 7 threads and can create a new thread by tapping the pin emoji. It's you, and the people around you, in a group thread, together.
For the last few months, Harry and I have been building a new kind of messaging app. We believe that social media shouldn't be all about ‘friends’ and ‘followers’, but about the people around you, and the places you go. Nearly puts you in group threads based on where you are, so you can walk in and out of conversations, without having to sign up or check-in. We wanted to capture these shared social experiences, like queueing for a club or living in an apartment, with the intimacy and immediacy of a messaging app. We hope you like it, and that at some point we find ourselves in a thread together. J
P.S. There's a secret way to add an emoji to a thread icon. DM us on twitter and we'll tell you. @heynearly
@hailpixel Thanks Devin. We're starting with a community moderation approach, so any user can delete any message. Users can also report messages. I'm sure this will evolve but we think the value lies in the immediacy of conversation rather than looking back at what people once said.
@vladimir_zivkovic Thanks Vladimir! We have big plans, Nearly will be the primary way you interact with the people around you so, videos, dating, payments, games, all built on proximity and presence. But for now it's just conversations. Drop a thread if you haven't already!
I find the app fun in an age of slightly drab experiences. It's interesting to see what's happening locally without the overhead of creating an account
Very cool - congratulations on launch!
How do you envision people using Nearly? Is it more for day-to-day life and meeting people in the local cafe, or is it more for events such as a concert?
For people that want to get a community going - how do you recommend that they get people into the app? (Do you have any features such as shareable links that they can use?)
