@ryanleslie - Building a publishing startup, one thing I noticed is the extreme parallel between the publishing and music industry. So I've paid a lot of attention to the models and methods of madness used within music. Given that and building up on this question "2. Any interest in still releasing the album through (now) traditional channels such as Spotify and Apple Music?" — Do you feel it's much more efficient (and wise) to work with these big distribution channels rather than challenging them at a game they've, in their own right, dominated?
@imcatnoone work with them to drive people to you and then own the relationship with the people who show interest! They're the big funnel - the discovery platform. Once you capture, cultivate and clearly state your value prop as a writer - entertainment or education, I know of so many writers and podcast publishers that are doing 6 figures from audiences in the mid hundreds!!!!!
Hi Ryan, I'm a big fan. Your 2013 show at the Howard Theatre was the first concert I ever went to.
Do you think a subscription model can work for other forms of exclusive content like behind the scenes footage, in-studio live streams, song snippets, etc? I think it would be interesting to see someone like an Instagram fitness model for example offer exclusive content for micro-subscriptions as a business model.
@osmanify the vibe here is access man. Content should be an incentive and anyone who wants the convenience will contribute some nominal amount. The access is the real scarcity. Hang out at the beach with your favorite IG model and grab a snapchat to stunt on your homies - what's that worth! That's the wave!!!!!
@ryanleslie - I'm particularly interested in SMS-based services lately (here are a several curated by @thinker). I have some thoughts on why SMS is a fantastic distribution/re-engagement channel but I'm curious to hear why you chose to use that channel (and more broadly, why you built DMM Superphone.
@rrhoover for now, SMS from a 10-digit number is the most direct way to bypass the clutter of social and cut directly into the message stream that's reserved for family and friends. My supporters in many ways consider me a friend simply because I acknowledge and show my appreciation for them. I mean, imagine logging in and seeing a new single for $99.99 on iTunes. My group exchanges that monetary value in return for access. Real access. Retro is the future. Better than VR is Real Reality. Pick up the phone and it's me on the other end!!!!!! Hahahaha!
@rrhoover Thanks for sharing that list from @thinker. Latest app I'm building is partially SMS-based and I've been looking for a slew to play around with.
@ryanleslie@rrhoover SMS is a funny one - its also the same medium that in many parts of the world esp Asia is heavily spammed.
It's not simply a direct route to someone especially as a service-provider-originated message - in most cases unless you're having a personal conversation or its your bank - the SMS is just rolled over by the user.
Ryan - I think the fact its your real number, and that someone can pick up and speak to you and that your a celeb means a world of difference (and also that they know they are limited in audience) and brings a supporter or fan 10 steps closer. Fab idea although scaling would become difficult?
SMS as a user-originated-transaction is awesome as its ultimately the best fall back for no-connectivity or absence of connectivity. Someone needs to build a better fall-back library and service that lets you move between data and SMS so that apps can stay alive.
