Motion One is a new animation library by the creator of Framer Motion and Popmotion. It's built on the Web Animations API for the smallest bundlesize and hardware accelerated animations.
"Motion One is published under MIT, free to use for everyone, even for commercial uses." but I must to donate to you to get access to the repository? Nice. I smell freedom with a little compulsion... Disgusting way to monetize
@turbine Hi there!
To explain, this is my side project. Limiting access to the source code is currently the only "upsell" to help the project be sustainable. It means I can target my free time supporting users that are getting the most value from the project.
In the future it might be if I hit a certain level of donations or find a different way of funding that I open the repo up to everyone, but this is what is sustainable for me right now. But the project is published under MIT, the docs are open, so you can use it for free in any commercial situation.
Edit: I am also of course open to suggestions if you can think of other ways to help OSS be sustainable 🙂
@jamie_lovelace This is not enough for me. I need access to the repository. For me it is very important and I am sure that for others it is also very important. I will not use this because I do not have access to the repository (even if MIT license). Perhaps that's enough for you, but it's not free enough for me... That's just my opinion and I'm not trying to convince the author to change self decision. This is his product and he does what he sees fit.
@jamie_lovelace@turbine if you *need* access to the repo, meaning it would cost you something not to have it, wouldn’t it be worth a donation? It’s free to use, but people who *need* repo access are expected to pay a little. You’re entitled to your opinion, but you’ll be downvoted for a reason.
@turbine not disgusting at all. It’s already under MIT license, so I am not sure how much more free you are asking for. Personally, I think this is a great way to maintain a project, and it may become a trend. More people would be discouraged to use a library with poor to no maintenance. Matt’s on the right path here.
@fillycheeze Good. You didn't need to write your opinion to me. If you are willing to contribute and pay money for it, then I cannot stop you. It is your right. I even have to pay to report a bug or make a pull request... It seems to me that this is absurd. It's good that at least the documentation is not for sale. Oh, I think I gave a new idea.
Hi Product Hunt 👋
Excited to finally launch my new side-project! Motion One is a brand new animation library for the web.
It comes with all the features you'd expect from a modern animation library: Timeline sequencing, playback controls, individual transforms etc, with even more on the way.
But Motion One is different. It's built on native browser APIs, so it can offer all these features for a fraction of the filesize of established libraries. For example, it's around half the size of Anime.js and less than a fifth of Greensock.
Additionally, Motion One is unique amongst JavaScript animation libraries in its ability to perform hardware accelerated animations, just like CSS. So if your website is under heavy load, your animations can remain a silky 60fps.
Motion One is published under MIT, free to use for everyone, even for commercial uses.
I can't wait to see what you make with it!
