As the pandemic COVID -19 continues, many families with young children have faced and continue to face overwhelming material and economic hardship and clothing needs. This not only causes short-term hardship but also has significant implications for children's longer-term well-being and development. Although data point to a recovering economy and a decline in unemployment, narratives from parents with young children indicate that hardship persists due to unstable work schedules, childcare disruptions, and barriers to clothing access. In developing countries like Nepal, where a quarter of the population lives below the national poverty line, the situation is dire. Some parents had lost their jobs, families tended to struggle with reduced working hours, and underemployment had become the norm for many families. Mothers who had lost their jobs and families on low incomes were panicking because they often needed clothes for their growing babies at the height of the COVID 19 crisis. The situation was aggravated by the limited availability and price hike of clothes in the markets. On the other hand, there are parents who have their babies spare used clothes once they outgrow.. Most of these clothes end up in the wardrobe or landfill. The manufacturing of clothing uses large amounts of water and energy and often uses toxic chemicals that pollute the environment and are considered one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gasses (GHG). The disposal of unwanted textiles also has a detrimental effect on the environment. In this situation, we, a team of activists, have launched an initiative to support needy parents in a sustainable way through various channels. Our team comprises engineers, fashion designers, managers, social activists performing various tasks such as building networks and personal relationships, creating posts on social media, overseeing the technical aspects of social media and the website, dealing with customers, creating content, and various awareness programs. We have created a public group on various social media platforms and a mobile app where mothers who have their used baby clothes can donate them or sell them at a reasonable price so that needy parents can easily access them. In addition to that we also work with experts and health care professionals to promote a child's social and emotional development and the well-being of children and their families. So far, more than 2400 garments have been added to the circular economy, helping more than 85 needy parents meet their baby clothing needs and avoiding more than 2100 kg of carbon footprints. We believe that social challenges can be solved if we come together. So let's join hands and become part of the change.
