MiniKey is the simplest one time password generator for two-factor authentication. MiniKey lives in your menu bar, and lets you copy generated codes with a click, and drag codes from MiniKey into authenticating apps.

Love the menu bar UX, although I'm sure many are nervous about how secure this is. Have you considered open sourcing, @thecoolwinter?

@rrhoover I have considered it, but decided against it. Their are other indie 2FA apps available, and most use a server or otherwise to sync data. MiniKey doesn’t for user privacy and security. The data is stored and encrypted using a key generated unique to every device and stored in the keychain. The app also never sends data, even analytics, to any remote server, so there’s no chance of your data being leaked via anything other than your Mac. Export options are also coming soon in the next patch, so if a user ever feels that their data is unsafe, they can export their accounts and move to a different service if they feel so inclined, though I feel that I can ensure MiniKey’s security.

Congrats for the launch! Khan, since lot of folks know(assuming) what a 2FA is, perhaps MiniKey USP is built on Privacy first principles which you can use it as your selling point on the landing page? (just a thought)
Khan Winter
@pradeeb28 a good though! I hadn’t considered it as a selling point, but after the initial launch privacy does seem to be something people are looking for. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for checking out MiniKey! I've worked hard at making the app as simple, fast and easy to use as possible, so feel free to DM me on twitter @thecoolwinter with any bugs or suggestions!

@thecoolwinter what would be cool would be to have a keyboard shortcut that grabs the URL from the frontmost browser and grabs copies the relevant code to the clipboard temporarily, and then restores your previous clipboard entry after xx seconds. I have hundreds of 2FA codes, so this solution probably wouldn't scale for me.
Khan Winter
@chrismessina That sounds like a good feature, I’m also planning AppScript and Shortcut integrations for automation, and have a few more ideas for getting codes even faster.

Other 2FA apps do too much, try to have all the features that you probably don't need or even want. MiniKey does the exact opposite, it aims to fade into the background until you need it. Then, it's only a tap away to an already-generated code right in your menu bar.
