Map Buddy lets users create maps using a mobile app, desktop website, or API. Users can discover and subscribe to maps that they find interesting. Their home map contains data from all of their subscribed maps so they only see things they care about.
There are many things that just aren't appropriate for existing mapping apps such as Google Maps. Particularly things that are timely in nature like events. This includes where a food truck is parked for the day, where a garage sale is happening, where all of the outdoor vendors at a music festival are located, etc. Map Buddy aims to be the tool for mapping all of this information.
While the goal is for most content to be user driven, there are some automated first party maps available in Map Buddy. This includes things like San Francisco Police, Fire Department, and 311 calls, and earthquakes from all around the world.
Can you imagine how chaotic a map would be with all of this information shown at once? It would be terrible! Instead, Map Buddy lets users subscribe to maps they care about. The user's home map only shows subscribed maps, so you might see garage sales and SXSW vendors and coffee shops, while your friend might see coffee shops, police activity, and public bathrooms.
