Make your last single use bottle, your last. Explore a plastic bottle's recycling journey, exposing the harsh realities of how ineffective the recycling solutions are to the global plastic problem.
As part of a competition I joined to build a sustainable game I did a lot of research about the recycling process for plastic. My initial goal was to build a game with the intention of getting people to recycle more.
However, I discovered that recycling is actually very ineffective. It turns out that the majority of plastic produced can't or won't be recycled. More surprisingly, most of the plastic that people put in a recycling bin doesn't get recycled successfully and instead ends up in a landfill or incinerator.
So what began as an idea to convince people to recycle more, lead me to learning more deeply about the problem and modifying the game idea to instead share the truths about the recycling process. The goal of the game is now to get people to realize that the world's plastic pollution problem isn't going to be solved by recycling, and that other solutions need to be created to prevent plastic production.
@davefaliskie Congratulations! Great application. This will help dispel common greenwashing myths and help us adopt more sustainable practices.
What do you think is the future of the app?
Have you considered adding "documented" routes ? I remember reading about Tesco's plastic recycling pledge falling short : https://www.bloomberg.com/graphi...
@aris_nakos There's several ways the game might expand, ultimately I think it'll grow with more and different types of educational information about the plastic problem.
As of now the main solution seems to be avoid using plastic, which is unfortunately also not an easy thing to do. So I guess more awareness at first, but ideally, yes, having a more directed outcome on an actual solution is the one of the goals.
Congratulations on your effort to expose and educate๐
I downloaded the app and tried to play the game a few times. Did I maybe miss an instruction page ? I had about 5 attempts before I realised that I have to move the bottle myself. However , It was very rewarding to discover that I if I make it to the end of the bottle drop I am rewarded with a card and I found myself wanting to collect more cards. But the bottle drops too quickly frustrating all my attemps which made me give up. I realise that this is probably the objective ... Exactly to show how many bottles end up not being recycled, but I found it frustrating. But then again, as I write this I am thinking that I should go back and keep trying ๐ so mission accomplished!! Well done.
@malaika_daude Thanks, yes the frustration was one of the goals. The intent is to have it mirror the frustration of the real life recycling process. I'm glad you eventually figured out the bottle movement, that maybe could be explained a bit more, thanks for the feedback!
