Joovv is one of the world’s most trusted manufacturers of red light therapy devices, and its patented modular design is the first brand to make powerful, medical-grade light therapy treatments affordable and accessible to the public.
After hearing about Joovv on multiple podcasts, and seeing the toll this East coast winter is taking on my skin, I finally looked up the red-light product.
Similar to exposing your body to real sunlight, red light therapy involves exposing your body, or area of your body to an infrared light. It might sound simple, but the impact those red bulbs can have is powerful.
Personally, red light therapy has helped me immensely with inflammation, but it also touts numerous benefits like increased athletic performance and skin damage restoration.
Have you tried light therapy?
I was skeptical of how this product could have any effect at all, but I tried it out and somehow I found it completely addicting. I'm a physician, I am interested in how this could work on a cellular level, so I did a deep dive into the science of red and near infrared light therapy and photobiomodulation in general. I was open to it because I know how differently I feel after a few minute walk in the sun and how I feel through different seasons.
Near infra red and infra-red light appear to affect a large number of body functions, including release of various hormones. After the first day I used it for about 10 minutes, I felt pretty revved up later that night and could not sleep. But the next day I felt much more mental clarity, I decided to keep at it and use for at least 10 minutes a day, usually right after my workouts.
I had already been keeping a log of my weight and percent body fat through my withings scale, and within 2 weeks, I could see a dramatic trend toward decreased weight and increased %muscle mass. Ive now been using it almost daily for 5 months and that trend has continued to the point that my % body fat may be too low. It's hard to tell whether its the JOOVV or the major strides I've made in running during the same period of time. Chicken or egg, IDK.
Sure, could it be placebo? There is a lot of data out there to show the physiologic changes with consistent use.
I also just felt clearer, its hard to explain. I had more energy, I felt more upbeat, I smiled more.
My only complaint is that I can't afford more panels. One panel is pretty large and will shine from my face down to my upper thighs, but I would love to have full body coverage at once.
Aw man! I was going to launch my latest line of healing crystals and snake oil products today – Guess you beat me to it! Seriously though: I feel bad for the poor desperate or naïve people who fall for these scams :(
@andrewdavidj Thanks for commenting! I understand your initial skepticism -- I had a similar sentiment towards light therapy (also known as photobiomodulation, or low-level laser therapy) prior to launching Joovv back in 2016.
Before Joovv, I spent my entire career in traditional medtech leadership positions at companies like Medtronic and Covidien. I initially thought it was “woo woo” science, but as I started to dig deeper into the peer-reviewed clinical literature, I was surprised (and excited) about what I learned.
Light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers concentrated wavelengths of light to both superficial and deep tissues. It has been around for a while, but it gained national attention when NASA started researching it in the 90s. As I mentioned above, it's important to note that the benefits of light therapy have been studied in depth in more than 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific papers and clinical trials.
