Introducing the «GitHub Repository Naming Suggestion Service» 🌝 Well, «GitHub Repository Naming Suggestion Service» is probably not the best naming choice, since it's way too long, not easy recognizable, little fun to say, etc This is why I created the «GitHub Repository Nam… [aehm exactly]». We all know, naming things can be such a pain. Especially when talking about product names, project names, etc. Often I see myself knowing about all the little details of a project, but it's kind of hard to sum up all of them into a single descriptive name, which fits for the included features. 😅 In these situations, it feels a lot easier to just write down a sentence or two, to express what's the purpose behind the given solution. And that's exactly what you can do with the naming suggestion service, you can visit anybody's public GitHub repository and use the open-source browser extension I created to generate a list of meaningful naming suggestions for the viewed repo. The naming suggestions are generated by the powerful AI from OpenAI. This is the same service GitHub uses for their Copilot product to generate code suggestions (since the extension is completely open-source and free to use and OpenAI is a paid service, you need to sign up on OpenAI https://openai.com/ to get your API key). In the naming service, AI is prompted to use the repo description to build up names, so we can focus on describing and don't have a hard time breaking down all our thoughts into a single word or word combination. Once generated, you can take any name from the list and get it into your clipboard by just clicking on it – ready to do anything with it. In case the existing repo name is included in the AI suggestion as well, the name will be highlighted, so you immediately know – you, or the repo author, has probably done a great job, since AI came up with the same repo name. Since the current repo name is not passed along to the AI, this really can be kind of a “verification”-step to see what the AI thinks matches your description the best. Beside generating new names, this is a great way to check up on existing names. In case your repo is not available on GitHub as public repo (yet): You can still take your description and paste it into the extension, or just write it directly into the extension pop-up to generate suggestions. I would love to hear about your experience using the extension and getting AI powered naming inspirations for your next naming challenges. ✨
I love this app. It's super helpful to have a bot that will help you find good names for your GitHub repositories. You can type in any keyword and it will show you a list of suggestions, as well as the suggestion with the highest score. I also like how simple and easy-to-use it is. This extension is just perfect for me!
