Hello Product Hunt! 🍷
I'm Melissa, Sr. Mobile Product Manager here at Firstleaf, and I am so excited to introduce you to our wine discovery app. Whether you’re scanning a wine list at a restaurant, browsing store shelves, or savoring a bottle at home, our app makes finding the perfect pour effortless, personalized, and fun.
Our Mission
Wine discovery should feel exciting, not intimidating. Yet, with so many options and little guidance, choosing the right bottle can feel overwhelming. Firstleaf was created to change that. Named America's Most Personalized Wine Club, we've unlocked the proprietary technology used to power the Firstleaf Wine Club to anyone, for free, through our mobile app.
How We're Different
We found traditional wine apps often fail to account for the unique tastes of each individual, and we wanted to make something better. We use your unique ratings to inform our recommendations, allowing us to evolve with you over time, helping you always uncover wines you’ll genuinely enjoy.
What Makes Firstleaf Special?
🍷 Scan & Discover: Scan any wine label, menu, or bottle to get tailored recommendations in seconds—no guesswork, just great choices.
🎯 Smart Recommendations: Firstleaf learns your taste preferences with every rating, refining your profile for even better suggestions.
📱 Virtual Wine Cellar: Keep track of the wines you’ve tried and loved in your personal, digital cellar.
📈 WinePrint™: Visualize your evolving taste profile as you explore new wines and deepen your wine journey.
🚛 Wine Club Integration: For Firstleaf members, you can easily manage shipments, adjust preferences, and rate wines—all in one place.
Why You’ll Love It
Firstleaf isn’t just about finding wine—it’s about understanding your palate and building confidence in your choices. Whether you’re new to wine or a seasoned enthusiast, Firstleaf is here to make every sip unforgettable. @melissastaley Congrats on the launch, Melissa! It is so impressive that Firstleaf could do chemical analysis. I'm curious—does the app have the capability to identify counterfeit wines, especially the old ones?
@melissastaley As a former chemist in pharmacy, I’m interested that are there any studies supporting the use of chemical analysis in personalized wine recommendations? How do you factor in elements like tannins and volatile compounds in your algorithm to tailor suggestions? I’d love to learn more about the scientific basis behind your recommendations and how they relate to the chemistry of wine! Great work on the launch!
@helen9 Hi Helen! At this time we do not have the ability to identify counterfeit wines, although it's an idea we'll explore for the future, thanks for sharing!
If you download the app and try it out, I would love to know your thoughts!!
@tonyabracadabra Hi Tony! We use a FOSS machine to analyze key components of a wine, such as sugar content, acidity, alcohol, along with other parameters to create SOMM scores for the wine (such as Body, Acidity, Fruit Intensity, and Tannin or Sweetness). We then take ratings a user provides on specific wines, and leverage a chemical breakdown of those wines to create personalized recommendations of wines with similar components you might enjoy based on what you like and don't like. If you check the app out, I would love to know what you think!
I like the look of this a lot - It seems quite similar to Vivino, an app that I've had before but they're more focused on price etc. that taste & the actual enjoyment of the wine.
Needless to say I don't use Vivino a whole lot but this would be far more up my street in terms of finding out what other people like about the wine.
@cranqnow Thanks, Sam! Another big difference between us and Vivino is they use aggregate ratings to inform their recommendations, where we're focused on leveraging chemical analysis to help find the best recommendations for you.
If you check out the app, I would love to know what you think!
Very cool to see a new approach here! Before Product Hunt, I was a product manager for Delectable and Banquet by Delectable , as well as working for Wine-Searcher for a bit. I see the founders are from Lot18 (I had a friend Katy on the early team there!).
There have been a ton of different approaches to wine preferences and taste profiles, and to my knowledge none of them have had as big an impact as the scan-to-see-ratings apps have. Where do you think Vivino (and apps like Delectable) got it wrong?
Hi @rajiv_ayyangar! Thanks for checking out Firstleaf, it’s awesome to hear about your experience in the industry!
Rather than saying apps like Vivino and Delectable got it wrong, we see our approach as different. We believe wine preferences are deeply personal. While other apps focus on providing wine information (Delectable) or recommending based on aggregate user ratings (Vivino), we focus on recommending wines tailored to your unique taste palate.
Our app brings the same proprietary technology that made Firstleaf America's most personalized wine club to everyone, for free, helping you find great wines anywhere. It’s about recommending wines that fit your tastes, not just those popular with others.
Have you had a chance to check out the app? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
