There has been heated discussion in the Apple Mac community recently about Safari's lack of support for favicons where people might find them most useful: on tabs.
It occured to me that an emoji could be used instead of a favicon on a number of popular websites and not look too out of place. So I created a Safari Extension that adds suitable emoji to the beginning of the page title so it appears on a tab. Currently the extension comes with support for over 150 popular domains/emoji and more will be added going forward.
Quiz: see if you can name the 25 websites represented by the emoji in the thumbnail image. And no peeking at the source! 🤓
Finally, what emoji should I use to represent Product Hunt?
@gingerbeardman I know a number of people who REALLY miss favicons in tabs when using Safari, so they're going to like this. Surprisingly this covers a pretty high % of sites I use already with a matching emoji.
@jeremyburge yes it really is quite surprising how the top 100 sites does cover a high percentage of our browsing. I'd like to do the top 1000 globally. A mechanism for site owners to specify their own is my ultimate goal.
I'll implement the 🅿️ for Product Hunt soon! Great suggestion.
