Discover book recommendations based on the experts that you choose. You start by selecting the experts you know and whose opinions you respect, and then get the books recommended by all of them sorted by books with the most recommendations.
Hi Product Hunt!
If you like finding books to read that are good and interesting, this tool website might help you.
There are many ways to find good book recommendations. One of the best is seeing what field experts or successful people have recommended. On this website, you can gather different lists of recommendations and have them in one list. You start by selecting the experts/successful people whose recommendations you want to see. Then you generate the list of books that all of them recommended, starting with the books that are recommended by the highest number.
You can also easily share the link with someone else so that can easily see the list that you generated.
@kjosephabraham Thank you!
This time, a week hahaha. I tried to do this project many times. I love reading books, and browsing for new books takes time, and it's always an enjoyable experience, so I created a project locally many times to check for new books depending on the people I liked. However, there was something I couldn't figure out. I developed part of the project and left it like that, then after coming back to it weeks later couldn't remember where I was left. Then I would start from the beginning.
I would start doing other features that were similar to what I found online. Books liked by X person, or which people recommended X book. But that is already out there, why am I doing the same? Then I would leave it, and weeks or months later would start again.
This time I tried to keep it clean. Choose the people that I like/respect and have a list of what all of them recommended, so that I can know with high probability what the best books are. Other features can be added later. This way I can make a combination of lists. What the CEOs are recommending, what marketers are recommending, what the famous book readers among them recommend (like Paul Graham, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Bill Gates, or Derek Sivers), etc.
So I worked on it the whole past week including the weekend, and stopped doing some other features (Books by one person, Recommenders for a particular book). And by thinking that I'm just procrastinating by trying to add too many things, I thought I should publish a simple version like this and see what the feedback is.
Features that I would like to add later:
- Small search for finding the person easier
- Add a custom title to the list you generated so that once you share the other person can see the title. "Book gift ideas for X, based on Elon, Mark, Bill", "FAANG CEO recommendations", etc.
- Book browsing page with the recommenders for each one.
- Expert browsing page and checking recommendations for a single expert.
- Adding book cover photos, and descriptions.
And other features that may come up from the feedback and from the future development.
I like this idea! Finding books sometimes can be tough for me since there are always too many options. Appreciate the interactive design as well! Would love to have some direct link about the book recommendations so I can quickly see an intro and decide if I want to add it in my kindle or purchase it somewhere. Congrats on the launch!
@kehui_guo Can you elaborate on the direct link, I'm not sure I understand it. Currently when you select the list of experts and then go to the generated list, you can just copy the URL (or click the Copy URL button) that is generated something like this: https://www.expertbookrecommenda...
so that when someone else opens this link, or you open it later/somewhere else, you can see the generated list with the chosen people.
P.s. Thanks for the kind words
@expert_book_recommendations Yep, I like the long list generated. However, for each specific book, I wish to have a brief intro and link to the book's page. For instance, I see "The Better Angels of Our Nature" is recommended by Bill Gates and Mark Z, then, in this case, I'll need to copy the book's name and search for it to see what it's about or go to an Amazon page to view more information.
If information like 4/5 stars, Amazon link, Wikipedia link, or a brief intro can be displayed on your website in some ways, then users could have a better experience (and easier way) to determine which book they would like to know more about.
@kehui_guo Now I get it. And I totally agree. I added a comment with the features that I would like to add in the future and the Book details page is part of it.
I started doing the Book details and Expert details page, so that you can see the details that you mentioned (depending on how easy it is to get the info), however it would have taken me much more time to finish and launch, and I thought that I'm just procrastinating by adding more and more stuff without knowing if the initial feedback is good. So I decided to do a simple version of it and launch it.
Depending on how easy it is to get the information, what I'm thinking of adding is a book Cover, subtitle, and description. Then Amazon link, maybe a Goodreads link, an Amazon rating, a Goodreads rating as well, the year of Publishing, and so forth. Maybe also add the comments of the recommender on the book, so that one can see the context where and how it was recommended (as another commenter mentioned).
@expert_book_recommendations Nice nice! Launching a simple version that supports the KEY feature is definitely super important and you can take time to iterate on it:)) I agree with your priority orders and really looking forward to future updates! Good luck!
This is such a neat concept! How do you ensure the credibility of the experts featured on the platform? Are there plans to add features like community reviews or discussion boards for each book?
Congrats on the launch!
@kyrylosilin
I haven't thought of anything as far as the reviews and discussion boards, it's an interesting feature to add. I'll have to think about how to do that.
As far as credibility goes, I've checked multiple lists and websites having lists, and usually, the experts or lists repeat. Most are interested in the same experts. I plan on adding more and more experts as time goes on and one way of choosing the next ones to add would be by the number of upvotes/requests per expert.
Also thanks for the kind words!
